Convenient Location - Standard Room

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jun 8, 2012
Joined a group tour to Japan for 5 days and stayed at Sunshine City Prince for 2 nights. The hotel is big and busy with over 1000 rooms. We stayed in a standard twin room on 22nd floor. The room's small but clean and well equipped with all necessary amenities. The best thing about this hotel is its convenient location. 24-hr convenient store on the hotel lobby and also 24 hour SEIYU supermarket within easy walking distance. It's also only a few minute walk from various department stores, and train station.

I have stayed at this hotel 4 times over the last 6 years. Its getting a little tired now and I will look elsewhere next time. The twin rooms are very small and the room furnishings are looking pretty worn. It has over a thousand rooms but its a dumping ground for large tour groups.
The ONLY good thing about this hotel is its location. Situated just 5 minutes walk from the Ikebukero train station; a major hub for many lines. it is also only minutes from the huge Seibu and Tobu department stores. In addition it is located right next to Sunshine City, a huge shopping centre and it has a wonderful 24 hour supermarket across the road where you can buy the nicest freshly prepared food and heat it up in the microwaves provided. So if you can stand the rooms being small and on the dingy side; and you didn't pay too much, it does have advantages.

Stayed 6 days this April 2012. The room and bathroom smell musky, beds and carpet had seen better days. Elevators is like riding the subway or train during rush hours except you had to squeeze between luggages too.
There are no frills or service to talk about at this hotel and I would leave it at that. The only saving grace for this hotel is its close proximity to restaurants, shops and Ikebukuro station about a good 5 to 8 minutes walk.

Stayed here in April 2012. It was a good stay for 2 nights. The hotel has 24/7 mini mart at basement. Next door is a big department store. There are many nice places such as wine shop, fashions and restaurants.

The restaurant at basement has great buffet. Steak, Sushi, King Crab and desserts.

If you like Tokyo, stay here for convenient and you can spend the rest of your time for traveling in Tokyo.

PS. the room is small as everybody mentioned but it has everything you needed, shampoo, toothbrush, even a razor and shaving cream are free.

Coming from the Ikebukuro station, look for signs to "Sunshine" which is the mega complex that the hotel is located in and get out at Exit 35. Cross the road and walk along Sunshine 60 which is a pedestrian walkway with lots of shops and restaurants and people blaring sales pitches from megaphones. Enter Sunshine City and ask for directions to the Sunshine City hotel entrance which is located inside the shopping complex.

The rooms are small and basic but cheap, clean and comfortable. We stayed on the 23rd floor which has an excellent view of the cityscape at night. There is free wifi only in the ground lobby. Being part of the Sunshine City complex, do take the elevator up to the 58th/59th floor - it's very fast and quite an experience, and there are cafes/wine bars/restaurants on the top floors.

Room tip: Higher floors have good views.

Hotels in Tokyo can cost you a bundle so we jumped at the Sunshine City Prince price. $140 per night, sure we'll take it!

The hotel is located about 1 km from the Ikebukuro train station. Great location! If you are heading there for the first time I would recommend taking a taxi, for 710 yen it will get you there without any problems. The hotel is close to the station but trying to find it for the first time could be challenging. After our initial taxi ride we chose to walk to and from the train station. There is a big shopping area located very close to the hotel. Lots of shops and restaurants!

First impressions of the hotel, is this a storage locker?! Seriously there was luggage everywhere in the lobby. The hotel is outdated and needs serious renovations but overall it was clean, not super clean but clean enough. You get what you pay for. Breakfast was not included but there was a few restaurants located inside the hotel as well as a Family Mart (convenience store.) We bought quite a few sandwiches and some drinks at the Family Mart.

The staff was very friendly and overall the service was good, much like everywhere else in Japan! For the price, its worth it! I would hope that they would update soon though!
