“Homestay like experience in a big city - what wonderful hospitality!”

As soon as I received an email from Family Inn Saiko after making a booking request online, I had a good feeling about this place. They were very quick to respond to my request and even informed us about a local festival that would be taking place the weekend of our stay. The inn is run by a lovely family and a very friendly receptionist 'Nicholas'. They really went out of their way to make us feel at home and plan our sightseeing in Tokyo. They even recommended local restaurants for us. The inn is in a nice quiet neighbourhood with good access to transport. We were able feel the strong community atmosphere at the festival which we thoroughly enjoyed! The rooms and facilities were brand new and everything was very clean. We will definitely go back to stay at this place!

City ryokan are mainy aimed at foreigners and provide a Japanese style experience sleeping on tatami mats. I stayed at this brand new family run ryyokan for 10 days and it was excellent: very good value, quiet, clean, and (most importantly) a very warm and friendly welcome from the charming Ono family and staff. It is in a quiet street 10 minutes walk from Shinamachi station. This would not suit those wanting: hotel facilities; a large room; being near a station; an old rustic ryokan (it is a new 4 storey block). But for me it was more than perfect. It is even better value for those sharing a room. The owners correctly advise that you take the North exit from Shinamachi station, but if you are coming from Ikebukuro I would advise taking the South exit (directly from the platform) and using the road rail crossing - this avoids having to use the station footbridge (hard work with a suitcase!).

This is a brand new family run inn (bed and breakfast). The hotel was recommended by an acquaintance in Toronto. Hotel promptly sent directions on how to get there from Narita airport. I ended up taking the airport limousine bus to Metropolitan Hotel followed by a $7 cab ride. I had a single room which had a futon on tatami mat, free wired internet with en suite bathroom. I believe all rooms are similar with the double being slightly larger. It took a bit of time for me to figure out the Japanese only remote control for the Air Conditioning unit in the room. I only stayed 2 nights but when I left it felt like I had known the family for a long time. The 10 minute walk to/from the subway station (1 stop away from Ikebukuro JR station) takes you away from the hustle and bustle of big city Tokyo to a quiet and calm residential neighborhood an aspect of Tokyo I would have not experienced. This is not for everyone, but if you enjoy interacting with a local family and want to experience a residential neighborhood of Tokyo, this is a nice option and the rate was very affordable for Tokyo.
