Hotel Sunroute Higashi Shinjuku
Ranked #11 of 83 Hotels / Ryokan in Shinjuku
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 14, 2013

Right next to Higashi Shinjuku station which provides direct subway access to both Shibuya and Shinjuku. Hotel is also walking distance to both Tokyo's Korea town and the 'dodgier'' side of Shinjuku.

Room and washroom is clean and bigger than some others in Tokyo. Perfect for a good night sleep after a day out walking.

Front desk speaks good English so check in was hassle free. Hotel let's us leave our luggage with them after we check out while we wondered around Tokyo before heading for the airport.

Would recommend for those looking for a value bunking place.

Our stay at the Sunroute Higashi Shinjuku was 8 nights so we got a decent feel for the place and we left with no complaints, happy to return.

Firstly, from looking at reviews posted for this hotel, it seems at least some refer to another Sunroute hotel, Shinjuku Plaza. This is a different hotel and is not next to Shinjuku Station. Be wary as I followed reviewer directions for the other hotel and arrived at the wrong place!

This hotel is just 50m from the subway station Higashi-Shinjuku, which is somewhat convenient, but the Oedo line branches off - so if you want to take a train to Shinjuku station, you need to change trains, which is a bit annoying given its only 1.5kms away. We just walked to Shinjuku station rather than using the subway because of this. The location is good if you like to walk. It's in Koreatown area which is great if you like Korean food. There's one Korean BBQ after another in the immediate vicinity. You an also easily walk to Shinjuku Gyoen which is a lovely park.

The hotel itself is run simply (no minibar, no extra services), but there was a reasonably priced laundry which was great, kvendiv machines on each floor and key card access to lifts and rooms and staff were helpful. They did sell us an adaptor for Aus plugs which didn't fit, but accepted the return when we took back.

Our room was small, but well laid out with a comfortable bed and a tiny wardrobe. Bathroom was very functional and amenities plentiful. The free wifi was very good throughout our stay. Our room was cleaned daily and was spotless when we returned. Towels were pretty small and scratchy, but overall it felt new enough, crisp and clean throughout. Walls were pretty thin, but we weren't disturbed during our stay.

It was great value for money (about $85 per night) and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to people who like a good value, no frills hotel.

We stay for 3 days in March at a twin room on ladies only floor. Access to elevator and floors are all controlled by access card. Feel safe and comfortable. Very clean and updated. Only complaint is the fire hall around the corner with siren on after mid-night. Located right above subway station and a lot of eating places in the area. About 10 mins walk to the Korean street near JR Shinokubo station.

Quiet location and close to tube and railway stations. Room bigger than expected however bar was closed on Sunday. Free WiFi in room via LAN cable. Free tea bags in room but no coffee.

Very strict on 2pm check in time.

This hotel is next door to the underground so is very convenient for transport links.
Check in was friendly and efficient.
My room was very small which apparently is the norm for this city. It smelled like an old peoples home.
The bed was very comfortable but one pillow contained rocks, the other was as flat as a crisp bag.
The room had a mini fridge, kettle, hair dryer, but only just enough wardrobe space to hang a tie.
The bathroom was tiny too but had a futuristic toilet and lots of toiletries. Ronnie Corbett would not fit in the bath but the shower was excellent - powerful and hot.
The hotel is opposite a fire station and I heard sirens during the night, however on the whole, it was a very quiet stay.
This is a mixed review but should I be forced to return to Tokyo, I would stay here again as it's pretty good value for a cetrally located hotel - Shinjuku train station is a 10 to 15 minute brisk walk away.

Location-wise this hotel is hard to beat. Right around the corner there are hundreds of amazing little Japanese restaurants. Go 3 minutes in the opposite direction and you'll be at Tokyo's biggest train station (the South or "Southern Terrace" entrance). It can be overwhelming at first but just ask the lovely people in the green JR help desk office for a hand and you'll be ok. You can also activate your JR Pass in there if you need to.

The rooms are very small but pretty standard for Tokyo. Just cosy and comfortable I like to think :) Bathroom has everything you need and more, in the form of great hot water and shower pressure, plus lots of extra amenities! The lobby is just beautiful and reception staff are very helpful and polite. Tip: ask them for directions to the Shinjuku bus station if you're planning on going to Disneyland. The bus is only ¥80 and way easier than the train as it's direct!

Wifi wasn't in rooms, only the lobby, but that was ok for us. Also the only English TV station was CNN but we love Tokyo so much I think we were only in the room for about 30 mins a day without sleeping! Overall, Sunroute was impossibly good value for money, and since we fell in love with Japan and plan to go back as soon as we can, they can count on our return!

This hotel was very clean and was close to all amenities. Staff were friendly and as with everywhere in Japan were very willing to accommodate us with an extra days stay. Only downside was that I internet was only available in the room through an Ethernet cable which does not work with the tablet computers that we bought with us.
