When wandering the streets in the Shinjuku district on a late night weekend especially, skip the tacky come-ons and large establishments and find the stone walkway that leads to this amazing warren of the tiniest six seat bars and hangouts. Of course they're not for everyone and be prepared for a small cover charge to grab a stool, but the experience is unique and interesting.

This is an amazing little area of tiny bars. Most seat a few people and generally don't serve non-Japanese, but it is worth wandering through a night to find one of the few bars that will serve you a drink.

...........but not to drink at unless you are Japanese! Not so much of an tourist destination as a Japanese icon. If you want to drink, head to the more common areas of Shinjuku or Shibuya. Many bars in Japan don't allow foreigners inside- doesn't matter if you think it's "discrimination".

We lost track of so much time here. It was great. Most of the bars charge a cover fee to enter but some are free to foreigners. The bars are small but a great mixture of travelers and people from Japan. We went to ACE's. The owner had a sign saying no cover and that he spoke English. It was great! He recommended Japanese drinks and was friendly. I met a girl named Hito and we talked even though we didn't understand each other. This is a great place to drink and meet new people. Definitely worth looking around.

tiny, scruffy, intense, awkward and magical ... can't forget for many years and can not wait to go back again.
