Our hotel was right by the Golden Gai so we decided to walk around the alleys at some of the bars, they are very dimly lit which is unusal for Tokyo but nearly all of them have a cover charge of some sort. Some of them charge between 1000-2000 yen per person, this is about £8-£16 each BEFORE you buy a drink. I am sure that some of these bars are actually someones front room, they put a piece of wood up and call it a bar and put two chairs in there. A couple of others we looked in had access to other floors so they might have been more roomy but as drink is so expensive in Tokyo we decided not to add a further £16 on top of any bill. During the day we walked around but the area is dead and everything is closed.

No photography allowed here, exciting underworlsy in feel, full of old bars, just big enough for a few customers. Often only by invitation or introduction you can get into these establishmsnets but there are all kinds of different bars here. Can be expensive. Great fun though and expect a seating charge of about 1000 yen.

I was stunned and excited by the Golden Gai. There is no place like it in the world. It can be hard to find a bar that's (a) empty or (b) welcoming, unless you speak Japanese. But the 'Orange Oji' bar has an owner that is really friendly to tourists, and we had a great time.

The bartender sweetly and politely asks to take a photo of all his customers, to add to his collection. He plays a slideshow of customer photographs on his iPhone.

We went here on New Years and it was a great little network of bars. The one we chose was called Nana and it was friendly with the bartender also speaking English

My friend and I were becoming increasingly frustrated by all the touts in Shinjuku and were ready to give up on the evening when we discovered the Golden Gai area. Its a series of tiny, narrow streets that are full of bars. And the bars are tiny - like 6 seats in the whole place tiny. But the atmosphere is great and everyone we met were very welcoming. and being so small you find that everyone in the place is talking to each other. The only worry is climbing down the incredibly steep stairs when leaving for the night.
