The place is not really easy but also not really hard to find. It is located in the basement, but has a big red sign outside.

Ordering was rather confusing at first, but after 5 consecutive days of eating there, it became really easy. Basically you order the type of ramen in the vending machine along with the toppings, such as the eggs, chasiu and etc. Once done you go in and wait for available seats, on days where the queue was long, there will someone to help you get the seats. Especially if you are going as a family, they try their best to sit you next to each other. Also while waiting you will be given a form that is also available in english to choose for example the firmness of the noodles and so on.

Sitting in the small cublice you place the ticket you bought earlier from the vending machine and the form that you filled out and place them at the edge of the table and press the bell. The tickets will be taken and your ramen will be served shortly. There is free water, cups are provided within the cubicle.

It is difficult to recommend on what or how to choose how thick and rich the soup should be or whether you would want thick or thinly chopped spring onions, how much garlic and so on. I have basically tried from medium to rich. I personally like the ramen firm with strong rich soup, a clove of garlic, with the chasiu and egg and no more than 3 orders of the spicy sauce. With that said this is one of the best ramen ever!!!!

We will definitely return here on our next visit to Tokyo.

Yummy soupy ramen where you have the choice of the firmness of your noodle and the spiciness of the soup. Just be prepared to queue if coming for dinner but it is worth the wait!
Not suitable if you wanna sit for long and chit chat.

Ichiran is my favorite ramen. Like the soup base which is not to thick and heavy. It is a bit spicy and you can add more chillies if you wish. The service was quick and very friendly, even tho there was a long queue outside nobody rush us out. Such a great late lunch with a glass of a cold Japanese beer! Worth it!

We chanced upon this restaurant when roaming around looking for dinner. We've heard so much about Ichiran and were so excited to try out the vending machine ticket ordering system. It was one of the few restaurants that had a queue. Best of all, it's non smoking. The vending machine ordering system was a breeze and so much fun like buying canned drinks. The ramen was very good indeed and it does live up to the hype. Try this if you haven't any clue for dinner in Shinjuku, it will not go wrong.

Note: when you actually find this location and you head downstairs, you'll notice a machine similar to a casino slot-like thing about 5 ft tall. Press English and begin picking what you'd like in your ramen. It seems complicated, but it'd be more complicated if you did what we did - walked in, sat down and had to be told in non-English to leave and start over. Took us a few minutes but we figured it out! Anyhow, once you've plugged your order in and paid, get your ticket that will be spat out, walk in to the seating area, take a seat, and hand it to your faceless ramen chef- he will then hand you a piece of paper where you can then specify free specifications about your ramen; spicy, mild, extra garlic, etc. If you're with someone, you can open the barriers in between seats and enjoy it together. Unlike in the States where chain restaurants can be seen as 'giving in' - it's not like that in Japan. Ichiran is a trusted chain and locals seem to enjoy it as much as tourists do. We loved our experience (and ramen) here and definitely recommend it.
