My friend told me to try this place out. She said that they were only selling just one (1) item - and that was the Tonkotsu Ramen (Pork broth). So I was curious.

Luckily, we were staying in the Shinjuku area - so while inside an Adidas store, we asked the staff where Ichiran was. We were pointed to the place just a few steps away.

I immensely enjoyed my ramen experience here. The broth was really good and filling. It was a different kind of experience as you are to be seated in cubicles with no human interaction with the servers at all. You can customize your ramen as you wish..

I think they really want you to enjoy your meal without distractions. Bravo!!

Wow, what else can I say....the food certainly speaks for itself. It's located in a basement just outside the east exit of JR Shinjuku, you queue up to get in and put our money into a ticket machine to pay for what you want with your ramen. If you're a big eater like me, you'll need the 950 yen ramen which gives you a second refill of noodles. You could add extra chashu, pay for a half boiled egg or seaweed. Next, you'll be shown into your own cubicle and asked to fill in a questionnaire on how you'd like your ramen. Next, enjoy your ramen and leave....or queue up at the ticket machine again.

I asked the desk at my hotel where they recommended i go for ramen in the area and within a few moments I was on my way to Ichiran. This place is easily the most unique dining experience i've ever had, but it might not be for everyone. You are seated in individual cubbies, complete with dividers and curtains. To call this, "isolating" would be a bit of an understatement, but that's how they do things there. The reason to go though, is the ramen. Just about every aspect of the tonkotsu ramen they serve is completely customized by the guest. If i recall correctly, there are something like 5 categories just for the soup itself and gets as granular as asking how you like your scallions to be cut. I feel like allowing the guest this level of control is an outstanding idea and led to my being able to put together the best ramen ive ever had.
