Though tempura is one of the most famous traditional Japanese food, you won't see as many specialized restaurants in Japan as sushi restaurants. This place has been one of the best for more than 100 years and definitely a must-visit-tempura restaurant.

reasons why you should visit
1)quality of food: absolutely great. Each ingredients are cooked in perfect timing and served one by one, so that you can enjoy and focus on the flavor.
2)location: right by the Shinjuku station (West gate). If you stay in Tokyo, it is super easy to get there.
3)service: as you expected at family-owned restaurant, you will experience very warm hospitality. They even have English menu for non-japanese speakers.

Hope you guys enjoy great tempura and Japanese culture here!

Top quality ingredients, expertly and minimally prepared in order to not interfere with the quality of the raw materials.
Prices are quite reasonable for what you get.
Homey, more personable service.
We dined here with our 7 and 9yo boys, and they were great.

First of all - restaurant run by a family, dating back more than 100 years - it is very traditional Japanese way of cooking tempura, with a modern twist. Simply beyond delicious. Choose a tempura course, and owner/Chef won't disappoint you. There are also 3 prix fix meals available. Expect to spent around $120.00- 150.00 / US/ per person, with good amount consumption of drinks

Went here with the wife for dinner early on a Tuesday evening, the restaurant was already three quarters full with locals but the owner was friendly and made us feel welcome in his pigeon English. Menu was available in English which was a huge help considering it was a complicated series of set menus available, not really compatible with my phrase book.

Food was great, a number of small courses of very tasty lightly battered tempura cooked right in front of you behind the counter. Ranges from the usual (shrimp) to the strange (fish bone tempura and prawn leg tempura!), all were presented by the chef with advice on how to eat each.

The chef recommended a saki to try and despite finding all sake to taste like hampster wee and turpentine in the past, this was very palatable, notable less strong and more of a subtle flavour. Highly recommend.

Meal was relatively expensive overall coming in at $100 each, but we did have both sake and beer with the meal. Notably more expensive than a lot of the meals we had in Tokyo but very tasty and an enjoyable experience overall. I heartily recommend.

Menu notes that this place has been in hands of the same family (though presumably not in the same location in the concrete building) since 1920 ish. To my mind this is what most tempura restaurants try to emulate.

We went there as a result of positive reviews. The menu was in English which was helpful and the Japanese gentleman that greeted us at the door on the first floor was very welcoming and warm but that was it for the friendly service. The waitresses were not as chatty or co-operative as other places we have been. We paid 1300 YEN each for rice, miso soup and 4 pieces of tempura that were nothing special (compared to other places we have been) still an enjoyable meal but nothing out of the ordinary. Too expensive for what it was and sadly the service reminded me of waitresses back home.

Dear JTLSMilne,

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that your experience at our place did not meet your expectation. We will do our best to provide a better service if you have a chance to come back in the future.

By the way, we would like to clarify one thing. At our place, the lunch menu starts from 1,990 JPY with 7 pieces of tempura, and we do not have a menu at 1,300 JPY with 4 pieces of tempura. We wonder you might be mixing up with another experience you might had in a different place.

Kind regards,
