ibis Tokyo Shinjuku
Ranked #14 of 84 Hotels / Ryokan in Shinjuku
Reviewed August 3, 2012

Though hard to find, this Ibis is actually merely 5-7 minutes walk from Shinjuku station--use Google Street view to get the idea before you arrive. It should be one of the most conveniently hotels near Shinjuku--all the department stores and Kabuki-cho are within 10 minutes walk, if you aren't lost.

When the hotel was just renamed a year ago, it ran some pr stories saying that it will be refurbished very soon. But as I saw in June, there was only minimum facelift at the entrance.

The restaurant was closed for a planned renovation, but it appears the works are not reaching the rooms yet.

The lobby, corridors and interiors were showing the age, but still properly maintained.

Both of our TWIN rooms are facing the main street, which gave us the luxury to unpack easier near to the narrow window. But there was not much space left--usual Japanese standard. Not the smallest room possible, to say the least. No noise problem from the street, but walls are thin.

The down side was the quality of the bedding...the mattress was hard and the pillow was not comfy. Not the usual hotel quality. Have not slept really well throughout the four-night stay. I had tried much better beds elsewhere in Japan.

If the hotel's own McDonald's was not your cup of tea, most local fast food outlets can be found across the intersection. Affordable restaurants are all over the place in Shinjuku and there are several convenience stores in the block.

There is a multi-storey grocery store DonkiHote nearby, where you can find all the supplies and snacks at great prices.

We booked this hotel for a relatively value price during some sort of promotion. Twin rooms are rip-offs in Tokyo, but the good side of it is you are also paying for the space.

Room Tip: Twin rooms facing the main street. You will get space to pack and unpack two large-size luggage with...

Reasonable price & good location just close to the shinjuku station. Convenient store and Mc Donald'sl located downstairs. You can find anything in the area. Good for a begining spot in Tokyo . I like a shop call donkey, penguin logo. You can find everything in a very resonale price. However the room is small and a bit old, especially bathroom. One good point they provide a coin washer and dryer.

You can't beat the location....right near the Shinjuku train station, and plenty of stuff to do within a 5 minute walk.
The hotel is a bit "tired". Rooms are small (but I expected that in Tokyo), but the bathrooms and carpet seemed like they had certainly passsed their prime.

Dated hotel that used to be the Star Hotel. My room was also tiny and the window had frosted glass, odd because, on the 10th floor the view may have been good. The 1st floor is a McDonalds so that can be handy. The price is outrageous, if you go a few train stations away, you can save BIG! Oh, and be careful with your key card (the ones other hotels throw away) this hotel puts your room number on it and charges 1000 yen if you loose it!!

Room Tip: All are tiny with hard beds...
