“Beautiful temple”
Reviewed March 28, 2014

A beautiful temple, we enjoyed the wishing for luck. It is very busy, but like all places that are in Tokyo, it still has a sense of peacefulness about it. After spending some time walking around the temple and watching incense rituals, we took some time to walk through the shop which, as other reviewers mentioned, are also worth a visit (we found some very well-priced gifts, from unique candies to hand-painted chopsticks). Definitely worth a visit!

“Great culture”
Reviewed March 17, 2014

We went right as school was closing so the street was very busy. Very informative, many options for praying and things to do. The street market was lots of fun too

“Great Place to visit - especially nice seeing other cultures observing rituals”
Reviewed January 21, 2014

If you are looking for old and ancient - this is not the place - the temple and Pagoda look to be relatively recently renovated but watching Shinto Rituals like the incense, the water purification and the wishing for luck - well worth it
The Shops around the temple are really a great draw and should not be missed. They offer a great insight into the culture and items that make the area nice

“Beautiful, worth stumbling upon”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

I went to Shinjuku to see this Temple. I was just about to give up when I stumbled upon it. Sometimes I found it difficult to navigate-probably because it so busy and of all the "eye candy" the BIG Bright City Lights the Tokyo buildings were offering to a 1st time visitor. There were City Maps throught, but a lot of them did not have english words on them. There weren't a lot of city street signs neither & It was very cold Sunday (January)- wish I had worn gloves and a warmer coat. However, I am very happy to have stumbled upon it as there was about to be a Ceremony. I cleansed my hands at the water station (as requested) before entering. You may want to bring some Yen for an offering, or to have your prayers blessed, or for your fortune.

As I was leaving, there was what appeared to be a "flea market" setting up within it's grounds. It was a lot of old Japanese curios, rice paper paintings, coins, kimono's & other artifacts for sale. I ended up purchasing 3 different Authentic Kimono's from a really nice older Japanese couple- who offered me their gloves ! I took a picture with them =)

“Holy site”
Reviewed May 12, 2012

Super crowded, but Japanese are so orderly and polite. Even their chaos is controlled. Not to be missed. Great place for souvenirs
