Classic Cherry Blossom Tour
April, 2023
Review
My husband and I had the pleasure of visiting Japan with JCT’s small group tour led by Patrick. I hardly know where to begin because we saw so much of the country, its history and culture - from unusual but delicious street food to an evening with Geishas. Ancient shrines, castles and temples were everywhere, and of course stunning expansive gardens filled with cherry trees in bloom!
Besides the usual sights of Mt. Fuji in all its glory, the Hiroshima Peace Museum, and Miyajima Island’s famous floating Torii Gate, Patrick took us to lesser-known areas, to get a feel for Japan over the ages. In particular, to Takayama to see its Festival Floats: scaled-down portable shrines dating from the 1600’s and requiring up to 80 people to carry them in the biennial parade; a stay at a Ryokan - a traditional Inn with geothermally heated baths (Onsen), dining on beautifully presented tiny delicacies and playing a drinking game with the Geishas; a 1950/60’s nostalgia museum; and watching the Jigokudani Snow Monkeys play and bathe in the Nagano mountain hot springs.
Patrick’s love for the country was evident from the get go. It just so happened that we all arrived two days before the tour start date, and because Patrick was so excited to show us Japan, he started the tour a day early. Who does that? Patrick’s a history buff, he’d do the usual guide spiel at each location, but it was when we ‘ambled’ throughout the day, chatting, that we learned so much more. Patrick's an excellent communicator and a master of logistics. Even with tight connections we didn’t miss a train!
5 stars!
Patrick is an exceptional guide. He is knowledgeable, informative, entertaining, flexible, helpful, and resourceful. He takes you not only to the iconic places but also to his favorite areas. He sets a brisk pace--be prepared to walk a good bit -- but he doesn't load you down with too many places in one day. He guides small groups from 2 to 8 and offers choices depending on group preferences. Most important, he is quick to figure out a solution to unexpected problems such as canceled trains. He is originally from New Zealand but has lived in Japan for many years and knows the country from top to bottom. He's personable and fun to be with and you definitely get your money's worth.
My husband and I did the 2 week Spring Tour and had a great time. Patrick was responsible for getting our group of 8 around the sights and experiences in Japan.
He did an amazing job with all his experience and knowledge from many tours as well as living in Tokyo. He calmly and expertly got us back to Tokyo on the train system through a typhoon. I would highly recommend this tour. It is worth paying extra for little stress, good hotel rooms, entry fees and internal travel all covered in the price.
The impact of the typhoon was a bit unexpected as the rain forecasts were not very high for the area we were in. But the felled trees blocking our route and the late cancellation of trains was a surprise. Fortunately, we had a work-around and then upgrade to Green Car for the trip back to Tokyo. Lots of people were stranded that day.
Great group and a lot of fun across two and a half weeks. Being flexible for the weather and inserting a few options worked well for everyone - the benefit of small groups. Great guests from USA, NZ and Australia.
We have recently done a Cherry Blossom tour of Japan (April 2023) with Japan Custom Tours. Patrick provided the small group of 8, with a comprehensive but also flexible program which allowed participants to pursue some individual interests.
We enjoyed different styles of accommodation - from traditional Japanese inn to modern international hotel In all cases, our accommodation was conveniently located to good transport links. We enjoyed excellent cuisine both as a group and individually throughout Japan. Food is an important part of the culture and Patrick's local knowledge was invaluable.
We had a great time! We want to return to Japan and will definitely be asking Patrick to guide us again.

Thank you Guenther and Jenny. It was a pleasure to show you around Japan, and will be working on the details your 2024 tour to make sure you enjoy the autumn season as well.
Had a great time travelling around Japan for 2 and a half weeks with Patrick, saw lots of very pretty places and had some unforgettable expereinces. Never felt out of place despite being seemingly younger than target audience. Hit lucky with the weather being great but Patrick was a great tour guide throughout the whole experience, always pointing things to look at backed with great knowledge. Would 100% recomend for anyone looking to see the sights Japan has to offer.
Jake and his cousin came to Japan and yes, they were the younger members of the group. But, both soaked up the experiences and it was a pleasure watching them see new things, explore new places, and try out "stuff" that might have been out of the ordinary. The rest of the group (older) also enjoyed seeing how you enjoyed the trip and Japan and that was an added bonus for everyone. Hope you get the opportunity to come back and do some more exploring.
We spent 11 days touring Japan, starting in Kyoto and working our way round to Tokyo. We ha d great time with Patrick! He is knowledgeable, engaging and organized. There were lots of laughs and some great meals together.
We visited temples, shrines, castles, museums and lots of older shopping streets. Too many great places to nail down a favorite, but our stay at the Ryokan was a bucket list item for me. The experience exceeded my expectations!
We traveled during the New Year, and Patrick made sure we could still travel efficiently and visit attractions despite the holiday.
Definitely a memorable experience. I can easily recommend Japan Custom Tours!
@Dscoobe - great trip and thanks for so many laughs along the way.
Guests travelled across the New Year period (group of three).
