This is definitely a must-go in Tokyo, especially if you're a fan of Lost in Translation. The atmosphere and the views are magnificent. Food and drinks are nothing special given the steep prices, but all the rest is priceless...

We started out the evening at the brand new Sky Tree on the opposite side of town. There is a building right out front of Oshiage Station and the Sky Tree that really made our night. I preface with this, because if you are on a budget, which we are (25 countries in two years, you get the drift) then take the Asakusa line all the way to Oshiage with a bottle of cheap whiskey and a couple of beers up 32 floors in the adjoining building in a staggeringly beautiful glass elevator, and behold Tokyo in all it's glory. Plate glass floor-to-ceiling windows and leather seating with no time limit and no cover charge.
It was this fantastic discovery, made largely by accident, that made our trip to the New York Bar better, not worse. First off, we were so drunk by the time we got there, that one round was enough. Second, starting off the night like this instead of pre-gaming at bars in Shinjuku really helped us out budget-wise. Third, we got to see Tokyo from two gorgeous and different angles. And even our round at the New York Bar did cost 48USD, we sat in the same seats as Bill and Scarlett, stared out the window, and were speechless. SO. Tips?
1. Get a buzz on first. Arriving drunk will insure that you leave drunk, and therefore, warm and fuzzy about the place and and the way they not so gently just raped your wallet.
2. Go between 5pm and 7pm, otherwise there is a steep cover, I think it's 1900¥ which will be more than your drink.
3. If you're going to go, spend the extra 800¥ and don't get a beer, get a cocktail. The gin martini is to die, and if you spend as much time in Japan as we did, you'll be hankering for something other than Suntory and The Brew.
4. Find a nice couple to take your picture. You don't want to go all the way there and spend $28 on a cocktail and not have proof.
5. Ask for olives.
6. After your drink, wander around the hotel like you're a guest.

The view from the bar is truly amazing at night. The cocktails are very very good and the food is also (as previous reviewers have noted, it is western style). The Park Hyatt hotel itself is something to behold - the lobby and the rooms, including the library, that you walk through to get to the bar elevators are quite spectacular. However, the bar is all smoking and that really detracts from the experience for non-smokers and I felt the service was a bit lax, particularly by Japanese standards. It is great for the view but go (and leave) before the cover charge kicks in at 8 pm. For a total cost of a cocktail each, it's well worth experiencing.

You have to go here...just only for the view.
However also the bar is excellent, as like as location as cocktails. The waiters are kind and caring.
Of course the bill is adequate (2 beers and 2 cocktails before 8 PM, after you have to pay a service charge of 2200 yen, about 6500 yen) not cheap, but right for this

The hotel itself is fantastic, but if you really want to pay $50 US for a bit of scotch on a hunk of ice, then be my guest. Oh, and there's a cover charge if the band is playing, regardless if they play for another two minutes or not. This is of course assuming you go there at night, and if you are there at night then you probably are either staying in the hotel or darn close, so you already know that Tokyo is covered in a blanket of lights. Nothing really new to see from the 54th floor. Stay in your room, or if you're not local, go to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building where, for no cover charge, you can go to the observation deck and see some sights to put your fear of heights to the test.

There are better things to do in Tokyo.
