“Ideal - Cheap, helpful staff, and a good location”
Reviewed January 25, 2011

We stayed here the other day and wasn't sure about the capsule hotel, as it turned out everything was very good, we used the hostel as a base to see a bit of Tokyo, and even though we had checked out we were allowed to leave a lot of luggage there while we did some sight seeing. Beds were comfortable and no noise so got a good sleep.

First off the location of this hostel is great - barely a minutes' walk from Akebonobashi tube station which is only 2 stops down from from Shinjuku.

Shared a room with no less than 20 other people (mostly men), and for that I think the £25 a night charge is very high. However, the room was clean and other guests were quiet and respectful. Despite your £25 a night hole in the wall, it was a very comfortable hole in the wall! I had some excellent night sleeps, even though the hostel seems to be in a hotspot for firetrucks and ambulances, haha. It's large enough to keep luggage with you, but there are lockers for each capsule to use. There were toilets and sinks adjacent to the room which were adequate.

One downside to this place is having to pay 300 yen for a shower! I've stayed in a number of hostels around the world and this is the first time my shower has cost me. Not only that, but you're limited to 10 minutes before your water cuts off. So wash fast! It's an elevators ride down to the lobby and down a flight of stairs to the shower rooms, where there are only 2 female showers. Thankfully I had no problem snagging one in the morning, but it's not the most convenient, especially baring in mind the bed prices.

The staff were extremely helpful and speak perfect English. It's a really great place to mingle with other travellers too. There could be some improvements and a little adjustments to the cost of this place, but it's comfortable, safe, and conveniently located and I would recommend it to others!

This hostel had more amenities than most and provided the best overall hostel experience in my recent trip to Asia. I stayed here once for about 5 days and then later in the trip came back for a shorter stay.

They give you your own locker that can store any real valuables you have securely. There are four computers for free internet access. It's 100 yen for a shower, but the showers have hot water and are pretty nice. The laundry is misleading. The washer is okay, but it took about five cycles to dry our clothes in their horrible dryers. The 9th floor social room is pretty cool and we met a lot of interesting people staying here.

Some reviews are inaccurate in saying it's a big hike from the subway as they have the wrong stop. If you get off at AKEBONABASHI on the Toei line, the hostel is literally across the street as you exit the subway, and takes less than a minute to get to (if you jaywalk) and less than five if you go to the nearest intersection to cross.

The staff is generally friendly and helpful. They provide you with a towel for showers. They were good with directions and spoke decent English. There is one guy that is a bit slow, but the rest were with it.

I only stayed here for 2 nights, but it was pleasant. Definitely no frills, but if you're looking for a good clean hostel with friendly staff, I'd recommend this place. I shared a little cubby with my fiancé and I slept like a rock. The shower facilities weren't too bad, fairly clean. They weren't crowded at all. Definitely an honor systems, since everyone's bags are basically out in the open, but nothing went missing from our bags. Mostly good-hearted travelers frequent this place. The front desk staff was very helpful with walking directions and directions to the airport at the end of our stay.

The hotel itself is located walking distance from many popular districts in Tokyo. I'd stay here again, but I think my next trip is going to be more of a "luxury" visit. I have had enough backpacking-time through Japan and staying in hostels, time to upgrade!

I stayed in a luxury capsule for 3 nights, luxury meaning that I got a stool and a teeny desk next to my capsule, and wasn't in as close of quarters as the regular pods. It was 4200 yen, which was far more expensive than the other much nicer hostels I stayed at in Kyoto and Yokohama. The actual capsule was very comfortable and clean, and not at all claustrophobic. But the rest of the hostel leaves much to be desired. It feels really rundown and sometimes dirty - the industrial carpet is stained, the bathroom floor is dirty, the slippers provided need to be replaced and the common room was pretty grungy and littered with trash. You have to shower in the basement. But there is free Internet and its located a minute's walk from the nearest subway station. Ace served its purpose, but I would prefer to stay somewhere else next time.

For a hostel it is very expensive, its about 35 euro a night (65 AUD), its quite a lot of money for a small capsule. The capsules provided more privacy then bunkbeds, but it can be very claustrophobic. the Bathroom is in the basement so you have to get into the elevator with a towel etc.

If you CAN find something else, DO so, but this is hard in Tokyo.

Ace Inn Hostel was great. It was social for the entire time I stayed there (Thurs-Mon), except maybe Thursday night when it was a bit quieter. I ended up meeting a lot of people very easily. I noticed that many staying here were traveling on their own, which made it even easier.

The location of the hostel is great for sightseeing and going out at night (unlike most other hostels located far away from nightlife and shopping in Asakusa). A cab from Roppongi or Shibuya nightlife areas takes only 10-15 mins and cost us under 2500 yen each time, so pretty inexpensive split among at least 2 people. And it's a 30-min walk to the main hustle and bustle of Shinjuku district.

The bed capsules are well designed, so you have plenty of room and they all come with a curtain for privacy. There are also lockers and some space to store your bags. Everything is new, nice and clean. It just opened in August of 2007. Showers are 100 yen for 10 mins (as enough for me) and very clean. Provided towels were very handy. Free computers and internet in the lobby - very handy and convenient too.

The hostel closes between 2am and 4:30am, so if you're out, you have to come back outside of those hours. Wasn't a problem for me at all since many places are open late and you have to take a cab back after 12:30am anyway (when the subway closes). I found the hostel very easy to find as well, with an easy convenient commute from the airport (I took the JR train option one way and the Keisei train option back).

I would also highly recommend getting the Suica card deal. I felt it was a lot more convenient than buying separate tickets for every subway connection like everyone else was doing. I got the Suica and N'ex deal for 3500 yen, which gave me the JR express train trip from the airport for only 1500 yen (half price) and 1500 yen in subway line credit. It was very convenient to just swipe the card every time I was at a station instead of fiddling with change. And reloading was very easy as the machines have an English option. I returned the card at Narita on the way back and got the 500 yen deposit back right away.

I would definitely recommend staying here, especially if you're traveling alone and looking for a convenient and inexpensive hostel option.
