Tokyo is an amazing city, but it can be overwhelming. Whenever you need a break and want to stroll through a peaceful hillside community, go to Kagurazaka. Vintage bikes, kimonos hung out to dry, grandpas making street sushi, outdoor shrines no bigger than a pantry, temples and houses tucked away in secret gardens.

No building here is over 3 floors, and often the owners will let vines cover sides of their buildings (but as the Japanese do, they trim them immaculately). Completely walkable, the air feels fresher here due to low congestion!

Food here as always is excellent, and an adventure.

20 mins from Ikebukuro

You can see traditional Japanese small shops. It is inside the Yamanote Line, but not so modern, but Japanese.

Many sweets shop and restaurants. You can relax with a cup of macha tea.

A Tokyo neighborhood with touches of a town from the Edo period. Very nice yo go around with many very interesting temples.

I enjoyed Kagurazaka's old world feel. It has a great mix of cuisine and the store that sells the oversized dumplings is in this area - tasty! Walking the narrow side streets you can picture the geishas making hurried small steps to their destinations. It's a pretty area with interesting stores that sell japanese sandals, kimonos, incense and handmade paper. It's a great escape from the typical tourist spots.

Lots of different flavours but with many traditional stores that sell handcrafted food and artifacts as well. Conveniently located between Lidabashi (E06) and Kagurazaka (T05) metro stations.
