We nearly missed out on this true blue Japanese experience, and aren't we glad we didn't. We had seen this tea cafe highlighted in a map of the swanky Omotesando shopping district., boasting a tea sommelier and scrumptious Japanese tea-based desserts, and took a chance with it. It is situated in a little lane between the Chanel and Christian Dior outlets, and is so discreetly signposted that we were pointed to it by people at the neighboring outlet.
Chachanoma is not your traditional Japanese tea ceremony kind of outfit. Within the small confines of the cafe, the waiter is the cashier is the sommelier. From him, we learnt that if the tea is of a good grade, you can eat the tea leaves as they are. We also learnt how to extract tea essence - by soaking the tea leaves for 3 minutes in room-temperature water just enough to cover them over. The resultant essence that you pour out into your tea cup and take in sips (not gulp down) is just out of this world.
I would venture to say that a visit to Tokyo is incomplete without savoring top grade Japanese tea in the hands of a professional tea sommelier who obviously knows his stuff and could speak English, to boot. The desserts were worth exploring too.
