First shrine of the trip! Beautiful and scenic walkway within easy access of the train station. For an extra fee you can visit the empress' garden. Highly recommended if you are staying in the Tokyo area or have time to get to if you are elsewhere.

I was stuck in Tokyo for a day as I couldn't get on the plane and so I decided to head to this shrine. It's located right next to the Harajuku station - when you exit, turn right (instead of beelining for the shopping paradise).

The shrine is magnificent, albeit it's a long walk in. There is a cafe at the entrance, a restaurant halfway in and a place to get some souvenirs. The restaurant doesn't accept credit cards by the way.

You get to write your wishes on a block, which you have to purchase.

This is an amazingly beautiful shrine. I have been lucky enough to witness two weddings on two of the occasions I have visited this shrine. It is amazing and very special to stand and watch a wedding procession at this temple. I felt like I had been transported back in time.
The temple surrounds are very serene and during the summer the gardens are a welcome retreat from the madness of Harajuku. These two places are polar opposites. It is an amazing experience to be caught up in Harajuku on a Sunday when you can hardly move through the crowds and the noise and then to arrive at Meiji Jingu Temple to see the beauty of another era is a treat for the senses.

I was there for Foundation day and there was a huge parade! so much fun! tons of floats being carried by chanting people who carried them for 2 miles and then to certain head guy and then picked it up as high as possible. There was also a fantastic drum show.

Can't actually comment too much on the shrine itself because of the parade taking up all the space.

The shrine and gardens are less than five minutes from the JR Harajuku station. The gardens and approach to the shrine are lovely and the city seems to melt inton the distance. The site might be helped with more introduction and history to the sit in languages other than Japanese as what information is there is limited.

We saw a couple of weddings in progress which was a real privilege.
