“Our Fave Haunt for Beautiful Sashimi with Friends”
Reviewed November 23, 2011

Am I really the second person to review Kaikaya? This has been a hidden Tokyo gem for as long as I can remember. It's very gaijin friendly. It's not cheap and it's v small and crowded. Make a reservation. Get the sashimi assortment, the steak jyuu jyuu, the escargot thingy, and the wagyu beef sushi (to die for). Go with a group of friend, drink tons of sake and be merry. Maybe you'll get your photo on the wall! It's pretty hard to find so bring a map.

“The best that Tokyo has to offer”
Reviewed September 6, 2010

My wife had been taken to Kaikaya / By the Sea by an expat friend when she visited Tokyo on business a few months ago. She had raved about the quality of the food so we decided to try it when we went to Japan for a holiday in August 2010.

What a fantastic experience! First of all, we were able to make a reservation by calling and talking to them in English which unsurprisingly is not always easy in Japan.

Getting there was fine, you should refer to the map on their website because that is a pretty good indicator but simply look for the high rise large capsule hotel with the yellow and blue sign on top on the left as you walk up Dogenzaka past the 109 building (probably 5-10 mins) and then take the diagonal road that leads off to the right at that junction. You will see the red awning of Kaikaya on the right after another 1-2 mins.

As for the food, we chose the omakase (which I think is set menu or chef's recommendation) course for 3,500yen each. We had about 10 dishes for that. Including a tuna carpaccio in a garlic vinagrette, a sashimi plate, a baked fillet of tuna in a soy sauce, a whole grilled fish, popcorn calamari, miso soup and green tea cheesecake (i can't remember all of the dishes to be honest). The quality was outstanding and the combination of flavours just perfect. This was all prepared a few feet away from us in a small and open kitchen. The restaurant is actually quite small so we were seated almost at a bar in front of the kitchen. Service was very attentive and friendly.

I felt it was such a shame that no reviews had been written on the restaurant as this was certainly the culinary highlight of our trip and would recommend it to anyone visiting Tokyo and passing through Shibuya.
