“why not?”
Reviewed March 11, 2014

It becane known when George W Bush came, when most of Japanese thought why Gonpachi?
There should have been zillions of other Japanese fancy restaurants in Tokyo, but somehow they chose this place. For lunch they serve udon noodles and reasonable ordinary Japanese cuisines, and for dinner it is more entertaining. Maybe the food is not first class, but for price, I think it is recommendable and if you are a tourist and want to experience something Japanese-like in Tokyo , why not? The real authentic high class Japanese restaurants are so expensive and quite difficult to understand why it is so pricy, also it is hard to get a reservation.

“Okay but...”
Reviewed March 11, 2014

I've been there a couple of times on requests from visitors from outside Japan. It's got atmosphere and the food is good enough, but there is so much more available in this gastronomically delightful city. And most do not require a reservation days in advance the way this place does. The last time I went my group was kept waiting 30 minutes past our reservation time. The prices are good, but service sub par for Tokyo standards, though not bad by most international ones. If you really want to go to Gonpachi, do yourself a favor and go to one of the other locations, such as Ginza. You won't get the Kill Bill movie set, but everything else is the same.

Straight out of the Hollywood movies Gonpachi is a Japanese Izakaya. Izakaya’s were most likely born out of Sake shops where people were allowed to drink on site. All major types of Japanese cuisine are served in these establishments, and although a place that sounds it is a jack-of-all-trades might not be any good, they generally are a great place to have some food and a drink.

Gonpachi was made famous for a fight scene in which Uma Thurman fights off 80 Swordsman. Although not actually filmed there the set was modeled on this restaurant.

Very busy as we walked in, it is recommended to book in advance (We used our hotel reception to book for us). We got some fine seats right in front of the kitchen and ordered Edamame, Banja Cauda (Which is obviously Italian, but what the hell), some Soba noodles, and some Yakitori skewers.

All were of a really nice standard. The vegetables served to dip in the banja cauda were all really fresh indeed. The meat in the yakitori was lovely and tender and the soba sauce for the noodles was warming and delicate.

The service was a little slow to be honest, but i guess with the business of the establishment it is a little understandable. The staff were really polite though, and as Gonpachi is open late it is a perfect place to visit after a few jars on the tiles.

“Wonderful traditional Japanese food in famous movie setting”
Reviewed February 11, 2014

This traditional and famous restaurant which KILL Bill was filmed is fun and the food reliable. I have eaten at the sushi bar upstairs and down on the floor. The sushi is fresh and well presented. The omakase menu is also very nice and affordable. Great for a relaxed meal with friends or associates.
