The moment we walked in, we were stuck by the decor, which though beautiful, informed us right away that this restaurant is aimed at women. Not being a dainty lady who lunches, I was disappointed with the portions, which were thankfully reasonably priced, especially for dinner in this city.

The mostly English menu was helpful, and the staff were friendly despite not speaking English. Food was okay, but bland, covered in sauce.

I adore Chien Fu. My veggie friends and I used to visit the old branch in Nagoya, and were devastated when it closed back in 2009 :(

I also visited and loved the Chien Fu (now closed also) in Tachikawa, which was good also, but not quite the same as the old Nagoya restaurant.

when I visited the Tokyo restaurant near Roppongi station recently, I was delighted to find excellent food at great value, with the same (or similar) flavours and menus I remembered from th days of the Nagoya Branch.

I've tried about a third of the items on the menu and all have been great - but I particularly like the veggie ramen and the mabo nasu! But seriously, this place is heaven for vegans and vegetarians in Japan!

As far as I know, pretty much everything (bar a couple items) is completely vegan, and though the friendly owner speaks little English, he has a good understanding of vegetarianism (rare in Japan). There are also English menus if your Japanese isn't up to scratch. Picture menus are very helpful in deciding too!

After living in Japan for 3 years, I found going to places like Chien Fu, a little bit overwhelming because I wasn't used to having so many choices! But definitely, I would recommend it highly.
