“excellent hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2010

This is certainly one of the best Grand Hyatts, offering a welcome combination of good location, excellent and new facilities, Japanese standards of service and cleanliness, and a touch of luxury usually not found in business-class hotels.

Tokyo being such a large city, this Hyatt's location may not be ideal for all, but it is located in the fashionable newer Roppongi Hills complex, with a large number of higher-end shops and eateries. Within walking distance are the Tokyo branches of many foreign financial institutions, and an entertainment district popular with foreigners.

Rooms are spacious, modern, and decorated with high quality furnishings and bedding. The hotel's restaurants are popular with locals; the gym and pool area are quite nice, and larger than some less international competitors'.

Stayed at the Grand Hyatt for 4 nights with friends in August 2010. Excellent hotel that exudes class and the service was impeccable though there was one particular incident with regards drinking water that left me a bit stunned ..more later. The location of the hotel close to Roppongi makes it ideal for visitors who intend to spend a lot of time and late nights in Roppongi. We did not do any eating at the hotel so can't comment on the food but I have eaten at Roku Roku before on a previous trip and I thought it was some of the best sushi I have ever eaten - very nice restaurant and I thoroughly recommend it.

Though the hotel is very nice and I have no complaints, I did think the price of the hotel was a bit steep and this even taking into account that Tokyo is one of the most expensive cities in the world. The hotel rooms were not super stylish/comfortable for the price so I do not see why it has to be one of the most expensive hotels in Tokyo. For the rack rates they charge, I would have expected a bit more. Fortunately for us, one of the members of our group was able to take advantage of the corporate rates offered by the company he works for and this was considerably cheaper than the rack rate. So moral of the story is if you are going to stay here, make sure you are able to get a discount off the rack rates they offer - never pay full price.

There was also an odd incident on one of the days we stayed there. As we were there in the middle of summer, it was very hot and we were constantly needing to rehydrate ourselves. The hotel provides complimentary bottled drinking water which was great. The first couple of days we ran out of water quite quickly and so we called room service to provide us with some more bottled water to which they complied. However, on the third day when we called up for some extra water (an extra 2 bottles of water), the room service person replied that each room is limited to a maximum of 4 bottles a day. We found this a bit odd, especially since they had been providing us with more than 4 bottles of water a day previously. And if this is really their hotel policy, I think it is a very odd policy given the fact that they charge top dollar for the room rates. Surely they can afford a few bottles of water?!? It was not like we had asked for 50 bottles of water. I thought this reflected negatively on the hotel and we weren't particularly impressed. We did not wish to pursue the matter any further but we certainly made a mental note about the incident.

Likes - very comfortable (especially the air conditioning in summer). Close to Roppongi. Free wi-fi internet.
Dislikes - minimal value for money and the water incident (see above).

Very nice hotel. Public areas are very impressive. The rooms are very stylish and well -equipped. Very easy to get to and from the airport using the Airport bus. Only ate breakfast in the hotel. It was very good but expensive but everywhere is in Tokyo. The hotel is also very well located for the Tokyo subway - its a bit intimidating at first but is easily the best way for a group to get around. The hotel staff were very helpful - particularly the concierge. The housekeeping staff also do a great job. The fitness center and the pool were also very good.

Highly recommend this property, especially if you are a family traveling with two children. Not many hotels in Japan accommodate 4 in a room. Staff in the club lounge were extremely friendly and helpful. Although it is not the most central location-wise, you can get around fairly easily with subways. High marks all around and it was a great start to our vacation in Tokyo.

Second time here. Much better than the first. This time they didn't bother asking me for my passport. The first time they did and I lost it with them. Having lived and travelled around Japan for 5 years or so, this is the ONLY hotel to have ever asked to see my passport. I asked if I was still in Japan or had been mysteriously transported to China.

The gym and pool are great. The Club Lounge breakfast was barely adequate. Nowhere nearly as good as it is in other Hyatts. Wireless connection pretty good.

The staff are attentive and fast to respond. The rooms are perfect.

Still - a crap location if your business in in Ohtemachi or Shimbashi. Takes JPY1000 ~ 1500 and sometimes a traffic snarl to get there. A real hike to the Hibiya subway line, too. Say about 8~10 minutes to walk there. Great if you want to go out in Roppongi and drink yourself into a quivering mess then crawl back to your hotel. Fast trip to Hanede, if that is your airport.

Finally - as a registered guest I was simply affronted that I had to pay JPY3200 per person cover charge in the Madura (sp?) jazz lounge. Outrageous.

Stayed here for 6 nights on business in May. This is definitely one of the nicest hotels I've stayed in. Location perfect, the gym is amazing, the pool area phenomenal, staff curteous, and the rooms very spacious and modern. I didnt try any of the restaurants, but the Maduro bar on the 4th floor has a wonderful atmosphere. Beware though - everything is expensive.

One great touch - free wi-fi and internet in the rooms. This should be standard at any business hotel.

If I had one complaint, it was that the business center wasn't open 24 hours, so I was forced to go elsewhere to modify a presentation.

Start to finish this was an amazing experience and I will always stay here when in Tokyo. When coming from the airport, take the bus - it takes you straight to the hotel rather than having to transfer from a train.
