“Good Hotel to explore Tokyo”
Reviewed May 9, 2012

This hotel has a really good location from where to explore Tokyo. There is a metro station (Daimon) just 1.5 blocks away and from there you can get to Shibuya, Tokyo Station and most anyplace in Tokyo really quick an easy. There is also a JR station 2 blocks away. Restaurants and cafes are located nearby too. And there is a really nice temple near the hotel that you should not miss. Rooms are good size and beds are comfortable. Service is good and staff really helpful.

we found the hotel staff at Shiba Park really friendly and helpful. Our travel agent had booked a double room for our daughters but the staff went out of their way to put them into a twin room, we had numerous visits to the desk to ask questions and they were always eager to help, this made getting around Tokyo for the first time a relatively easly experience.
Our room was in the annex on the 8th floor and whilst not being anything startling it was clean and had everything we needed including internet access. They also had a washing machine, dryer and iron on the 4th floor which was useful

Room Tip: I didn't realise until we were there that they have smoking and non smoking floors another time...

We did not have particularly high expectations before we arrived but we preferred it immensely when compared to our higher starred hotel in Kyoto. On checking in the hotel staff immediately spotted that it was my partner's birthday the following day and wished him a happy birthday there and then, and then followed this up with a half bottle of champagne on the day of his birthday! Their English was great and they appeared so genuinely friendly and helpful. It is these small touches that made our stay at the hotel so pleasant.

The room was perfectly clean and a very decent size, quiet too. We stayed in their annex on the 10th floor. I also liked the fact that you could leave a card on the bed if you did not need your bed linen changed which is good for the environment. We did not eat at their restaurant so I can't comment on that, and instead ate out at one of the many cheaper local restaurants.

It did not take long to walk from the local JR station (Hamamatsucho, 10 mins?) which is on the Yamanote line and is ideal for getting to all the common tourist spots (announcements are made in English too!). The park behind the hotel is also worth a brief visit as well as Tokyo tower.

Stayed five nights with myself and two teenage boys. It well located for the tokyo tower (try the crepes from the stall at the bottom!) and the temple. A short walk to the JR HAMAMATSUCHO STATION and you can go anywhere on the tourist trail. The rooms were a good size, the tripple was two singles and a fold out type bed, all were comfortable. We were on the 5th floor annex which i believe has been refitted as it looked new, a couple staying on a higher level said their room was old. The staff were VERY helpfull and the airport shuttle was a blessing at the end of the week! Recommended if your staying in the area and want a reasonably priced stay.

My overall rating is actually 3.5, for fairness.

Let's face it, it is always challenging to find a hotel that satisfy your need without paying an arm a leg, when you visit Tokyo. After staying in Shiba Park Hotel last week, I felt an urge to share this little secrete I discovered to our fellow travelers if you happen to be in Shiba area. The hotel experience is boosted by one of its Restaurant call Hanasanshou.

The hotel is not by a major street in Shiba Park area, which, according to a friend of mine from Tokyo, is a major corporate/business area in Tokyo, but the "Airport Limousine" from Narita Airport (3000 Yen) can take you to the hotel directly. The hotel is about 10-15 minutes of walk from Tokyo Tower, and a famous temple called Zojo-shi, and Shiba Park. It is pretty quiet area and you don't really feel the pressure of buildings as you are in Ginza or other busy part of Tokyo.

Entering the hotel, you will find the lobby, although not lavish, is functional. Moreover, the display the one corner of the lobby provided a snapshot of the history of Tokyo Tower area (since 1958) and paired with samples of the Japanese products ranging from radio and phonograph players. There is even a Japanese made Vespa in display. The front desk clerks are very friendly and have good command of English.

Although the hotel is not big, it does have two annexes. My room was on the 7th floor of "Tower Annex". I need to mention this because, as the guest of the 7th floor, you have access to a lounge, which offers coffee, tea, juices, milk, newspaper, and a computer and a printer with internet access. The lounge open until 11:00pm in the evening and you will find some pastries as light breakfast. I enjoyed it and it felt even better when I realize some of my colleagues staying in the other floors did not have this perk even though we are paying the same room rate.

The room size is a bit small from western standard, but I'd say it is OK except the "typical" bathroom may be a bit tight for people over six-feet. I got a room with a Queen bed and there is still room for a coffee table with two armed chairs. A dresser to put LCD TV on and a Thermal-heater for hot water. In-room internet access with a cable is provided and also breakfast are included in my room rate. For breakfast, you have the choice of Western (in main building) or Japanese (in Annex). I had western for two mornings and was not impressed.

So why I feel "Shiawase" (a sense of happiness) when I stayed in this hotel? It was because of the wonderful dining experience in the Japanese restaurant called "Hanasanshou". My Japanese colleague did recommend it to me but I, being cost sensitive, was stunned by the 8000 yen dinner (plus 4000 yen for drink options) sticker price. In order to find out more about the restaurant, I did take advantage of the breakfast offer and it was then I got hooked.

The breakfast was "simple" from Japanese standard. Rice or portage with pickles, a piece of fish and tofu, and top it with a bow of miso soup. After the first bite, I was surprised by the taste and the flavor of the pickles. It is flavorful but not very salty as most of the Japanese pickles. The fish and cooked food were mild with the right touch of seasoning The miso soup was heavy in flavor and could provide you a solid foundation to kick-off a day's work.

I then check with my friend and found the style is the so-called "Kai-seki lio-li" (a "zen"-based Japanese style of cooking and presentation). The chef is proud of using nature ingredients and flavoring in a way that seasonings should only be added to enhance the flavor of the food. The presentation is also follow the season. This is the time for "Sakura" (Cherry blossom), you can go imagine how colorful the courses are presented.

I saw the presentation only on picture as I did not spend the money on dinner. But I did have lunch there and had a sample of what they offer for dinner. I had their combination set and I was really impressed by it. The service was great, and one great course after another just kept me going; and, in the middle of my lunch, I suddenly had a feeling that this may be close to haven for Japanese food lovers.

A sense of Shiawase!

The lunch is about 3000 yen but it is way worth it. The hotel gave us a coupon to knock 500 yen off the tab, and it really boosts the quality-price ratio of the meal. Next time, if you happen to be in Shiba area and you have a crave of great Japanese food, I'd suggest you indulge yourself for this Kai-seki style of lio-li and see if you also find a happiness and inner peace from it.

Room Tip: Get lounge access.

The Shiba Park Hotel was the first hotel I stayed at in Tokyo. The staff here was a major highlight of the hotel. They were friendly, spoke english, and went out of their way to please the customer! I stayed in the Annex, the room size for Tokyo was large, and clean. It offered a good size bathroom, and free internet via LAN connection. Plenty of restaurants within the complex. Breakfast offered both Japanese and western options, and unlimited coffee. Location was good with shuttle service from Narita, and easy access to Tokyo Metro. Plenty of things to explore in the area including Shiba Park, Zojo-Ji Temple, Tokyo Tower. Easy to get to other areas of Tokyo via JR Rail or Tokyo Metro. Stayed there six nights at the beginning of the Japan trip and one night in the middle. Price is toward the middle to middle high range. Would stay there again.

Room Tip: Get a room in the Annex.

This is a business hotel in the Shiba park area. Close to Shinbashi and Hamamatsucho areas. Rooms are standard size and come with regular amenities. Service staff is very nice and helpful. Nothing really great about the hotel but nothing bad either. Lots of restaurants on site. My room smelled like smoke. The elevator is slow at points. There is free Wifi in the lobby. This is a central neighborhood, but is mostly office buildings. So nightlife is most after weekdays after work.
