I stayed at the Miyako hotel in April, 2005 with my two daughters aged 9 moths and 6 years old - we went on an amazing tour of Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka) just the three of us and our wonderful au pair. Japanse people are so friendly and travelling alone with children is not a problem. Everywhere, you will be greated and welcomed. Restaurants and trains have special areas for families - even the Narita airport have special lounges for families - for your convinience and for that of fellow travellers who do not want to be disturbed by noice;-) Japan is very organised and safe.
We had an amazing time in Japan during the Cherry Blossom. Tokyo is wonderful but if this is your first and perhaps only visit to Tokyo I would suggest a hotel closer to the downtown areas. The Miyako is in a nice but quite neighborhood about 20 - 30 from the main shopping area.
The rooms are large and the food is good. Not everyone speaks english - in Japan as a whole - but at the hotel this is no problem.More
