Shinagawa Prince Hotel Tokyo
Ranked #40 of 116 Hotels / Ryokan in Minato
Reviewed November 2, 2013

The Shinagawa Prince hotel has a number of different towers on its property all connected by shops, etc. making it seem like you're in Las Vegas with so many people milling around. We were on the main tower 29th floor and the room was clean, comfortable, yet small. I had expected something larger considering that it's a Prince hotel, but that was not the case. The hotel is showing its age and could use a facelift, but it's still okay because of its location across the street from the Shinagawa train station. There are many restaurants outside the hotel to enjoy, but the shopping is not the greatest. Surprisingly, they don't provide ice in the entire hotel. They said I had to go to a convenience store if I wanted ice. What's that all about? So if you want to have a cocktail in your room, plan on buying some ice each day or drink it warm. Have fun!

I stayed here for business twice. I recommend staying in the recently renovated N-Tower. The South Tower is old and the rooms are quite small. Touch both walls at the same time small....

Good location (Shinagawa station is a great home base for any activity in Tokyo, or on your way to another city)
Rooms- Small, and vary by tower,
Amenities/Facilities- Beware, all facilities are at an extra charge. They have a great gym that averages $25/visit. Keep in mind gym memberships in Tokyo cost up to $300/month... so this isn't so crazy. Pool is the same story, separate daily fee.

Room Tip: Try the N Tower. Skip the inclusive breakfast service.

We've been to Tokyo a few times now but this is the first time we've stayed at the Shinagawa Prince Hotel - and it will definitely be the last! This is the first time we have ever stayed in a hotel that charged its guest to use its own hotel swimming pool - and it was not just a notional charge, it was around £10 per person including our 5 year old son - when I booked the hotel there was no indication that a charge applied otherwise I would have chosen a different hotel.

It was stated that there was NO FREE WIFI but what you aren't told is that the free wired internet so useless it is basically false advertising to say there is free internet access.

The reception staff were also exceptionally rude - don't dare ask even ask them a question before 2pm if you are not an existing guest as they are exceptionally stringent about the 2pm check-in (if you try to book in so much as 5 minutes before 2pm they will charge you extra accommodation charges!).

Do yourself a favour and DO NOT STAY IN THIS HOTEL!!

Room Tip: Stay in a different hotel!

Had a stay just in the passed weekend. Room is small but is fine. View is nice because we stayed 36th floor, far end of Tokyo bay and flight lights from Haneda airport. Easy been confused by different tower / lobby. Always need to wait in long line either for breakfast or just a quick drink at bar. No gym inside building, have to walk ~10min outside to a tennis / golf center. Even as hotel guest but have to pay for using gym, addtional charge for towel, shower and water. Right opposite of JR Shinagawa station, many many tourests in this hotel, actually several hotels shared in "Prince" family.

Over a year ago, I visited this hotel as well: the economy North tower of the Prince hotel. As soon you leave Shinagawa station (easy access by Narita express, or train from Haneda airport), cross the road at the traffic light, walk aside the MacDonalds, you find after the small stairs the "Norht building". Identified by small sign; do not go to the big Prince hotel building. Room this time small. Challenging to find a place for your stuff. Keep your suitcase packaged and lay it on the ground in front of the bathroom. It just fits; don't break your neck at night. Room is clean, bed sleeps good, shower is powerful, internet is fast (both LAN and WLAN. You have a refrigerator in the room, air-conditioning is switched-off to save energy. The de-humifier might help, but has a Japanese manual. I was lucky that summer is over, to can simply open a window, to get fresh air in. Otherwise the room would be pretty hot. On each floor you find a vending machine for beverages, and an pants presser to use.
Next to the MacD there is an ATM machine (mastercard), as well the 1st entrance of the large Prince hotel building you find the other brands.Enough choice for restaurants around. If you search the classical Japanese restaurants, find the stairs down into the "basement", there you can find a good tempura restaurant and sashimi/sushi. When you want to change cash, go to the large Prince hotel and find change machines in the lobby; right side from the main counter. The real coffee shop disappeared: so you have your choice at the MacD in the early hours, or wait till the restaurants open around 07:30. Jetlag no problem, to grab a snack or drink, directly next to the hotel in a convenience store.

The North tower single room was small and a bit spartan, but the whole tower has been given a complete makeover since I stayed here in 2009 when it was dingy. Recommended as a budget option. There is a coin laundry to cut down on laundry costs. Wi-fi was free and a good signal strength in my room. Also has a wired internet connection that enabled me to use my Airport Express. Sound insulation was good. In room safe. TV gets CNN which is the only mostly English station I could find.

The Annex Tower has larger rooms and the finishing and furnishings are better however there are minor scuffs on the wall covering. Bathroom is a step up from the North Tower. Otherwise the same comments apply.

The Prince is very convenient for the airport bus (stops right in the forecourt) or you can get the train direct to Shinagawa station on the JR line.

The JR Yamamote line from Shinegawa Station is very good for visiting the major tourist areas. Additionally then Shinkansen trains run out of Shinagawa if you are travelling to Kyoto or Hiroshima.

There is no subway at Shinagawa but a couple of stations away on the JR line you can pick it up.

A reasonable selections of shops a few steps away including the 7-11 store which has an ATM that accepts non Japanese cards.

We stayed at the Shinagawa Prince Hotel for three nights as a base for exploring Tokyo. Great place with terrific views. Lots to do within the building complex and the facilities are excellent. We had a fabulous meal at the "Top of Shinagawa" restaurant which was a little pricey but worth every penny. The train station is just across the road which makes getting around on the Metro or JR Line a doodle. Rooms are a good size - for Japan!

Room Tip: Not immediately obvious where this place is when you come out of the train station dazed and jet lag...
