“Almost hate to write this review because we love it so much and it's getting popular! Fantastic Concierge!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2013

We simply love STRINGS. We are frequent travellers to Tokyo and this hotel really holds a special place in our hearts. This time the hotel was FILLED...impossible to get a reservation for our whole stay. Here's what we love about it. Despite the fact that it is a corporate hotel the people there make it feel VERY comfortable and familiar while at the same time offering the very, very best professional service of almost any hotel we've ever stayed at anywhere in the world. One of the people who makes it special is BEN JOHNSON the concierge. The last time we were in Tokyo he had been transferred temporarily to their sister hotel. This time BEN was BACK! He is really fantastic. He is Australian and fun to talk to and a fountain of information! He rides his bike to work so he KNOWS this city! Also Mr. Ozawa the chef is fantastic. If one goes to the trouble to know the names of the people at the hotel you know it must be good. The houskeeping is impeccable and the last time we were there with our son the housekeeper knew we had checked out for a few days to go to Hakone and KEPT a toy that he had left behind and voila it was sitting on the pillow in the new room when we checked back in!! Now that's service! Also the location is very convenient as SHINAGAWA STATION is right there and that is one of the stations that the Narita Express from the airport stops. Also there is lots of shopping at the station and it's near a great restaurant called TY HARBOR which is on the waterway and also VIA PARTENOPE which is an Italian place with great food with another branch in EBISU called PARTENOPE. We really dream of this hotel when we are back home.

Dear galutengirl,

It is an absolute joy to have you stay with us and thank you for the amazing 5 star review you have also given us. The team were extremely pleased to hear know how much you love our hotel and the service such as the thoughtfulness of our housekeepers.

Shinagawa station continues to improve it's offerings as the most convenient location in Tokyo, with easy access to airports as well as the rest of the Tokyo metropolitan area, and a few hundred restaurant options within 5 minutes walk and 1000's within a few minutes train ride in addition to our two fantastic in-house restaurants.

We are sorry that we have been fully booked recently as the word has gotten out, but hopefully Ozawa san and I can welcome you back in the near future. I am sure to have something new for you to experience in Tokyo.

Kindest regards,

Ben

Right next to Shinagawa station so easy to get to everything from here, nice staff and not bad breakfast. Rooms are comfy and because there are only 6 floors of rooms at the top of an office tower you get a nice view without a horrible elevator ride. Definitely recommend.

We chose The Strings becasue of its close proximity to Shinagawa station (stayed between September 12 - 17). My wife, 9 month old and I have never been to Japan thought this would be a convinient base during our stay. The hotel's interior was very impressive - clean lines, melding traditonal Japanese and modern design. Our room was well appointed and larger than what we had expected given the reviews about hotel room sizes in Tokyo. The bathroom design was a stand out very modern but again felt traditional. There was a separate bath and shower. The staff were friendly and the service was very efficient. Due to a typhoon our plans to go to Kyoto were delayed and one of the front desk staff (unfortunately I have forgotten his name), offered to assist us with ensuring we could stay another evening at The Strings and changing our accommodation booking in Kyoto and finding out whether there were any other issues that might further affect our plans. The staff member confirmed the changes and updates via letter within a couple of hours - that's what I call service!

Dear Ben S,

Thank you for the wonderful five star review and we are delighted to hear that you found our hotel to be the perfect location for your family's trip to Japan. It is especially pleasing to know that our team were able to go above and beyond your expectations in changing your plans due to the typhoon.

Our Deluxe rooms are well appointed, feel larger than the 30.5-32 Square metres and are the popular with regular guests. Hopefully we will have the chance to welcome you back again soon.

Kind regards,

Ben Johnson

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
Experience at this hotel is simply dull. The rooms are small (being a club member I was surprised at the size of the room which had a queen size bed instead of king eventhough we were upgraded)
The building, although I thought it was conveniently located, it turns out there are other places in tokyo probably with better connections and closer to attractions
By the way the hotel is only a portion of a building occupying floors 26 to 32 so it is confusing when you see the professional picture because that is not reflecting the fact that the hotel does not really have a true welcoming reception. You gotta find your way, go through two elevators, one to the 26th floor then another to your room. The reception hides from the exit of the elevators.
Tiny gym and no spa whatsoever. Minimal dining options inside the hotel. A chinese restaurant in Tokyo. Who is going to go there???? They should have a traditional japanese cuisine or something different.

THE WORSE AND MOST CONCERNING PART OF THE TRIP
The second day my wife realized that someone from cleaning (we think) took from our room an umbrella we bought in Seoul while we were running around the city on a rainy day and although it wasn’t expensive we became very fond of it quickly as a memento of our trip. They never found it and they did nothing to repair or compensate the mishap for us except to offer one dull umbrella from the hotel and they said they were going to “investigate the issue”. We were only introduced to the guest manager on our way out after checking out, who had not much to offer except the typical apology. BOTTOMLINE: If they can’t figure out who took an umbrella from a room when they should have the schedule for all cleaning personnel we feel they should not call themselves a five star hotel.
Save your money and go somewhere else. There are plenty of good options in Tokyo. We certainly will not go there again.

This ANA Intercontinental hotel is located on the 26th floor and above of a high rise building.

It is literally right next to the Shinagawa train station (5 min walk). The hotel service is excellent as the staff is very helpful and polite. The nightly rate is on par with other ANA Intercontinental hotel in Tokyo.

However, there is no much going on near the hotel though. One has to take the JR train to Tokyo or Shinjuku.

The hotel rooms are located above the 26th floor and provide a nice view over the city. Conveniently lokated in walking distance to Shinagawa station. Very friendly staff, nice and clean rooms. In the rooms looking to Shinagawa station you sometimes might hear the sound of the trains. I would definetivly choose this hotel again.

The Strings hotel itself is very efficient, especially if you are only staying for a few days and not spending too much time in the hotel itself. This is not a luxury hotel, so don't expect top of the line accommodations, staff calling you by name, etc., but very clean, nicely decorated, comfortable, safe, and the staff is very polite and accommodating. The restaurants are expensive but convenient and room service is excellent. The bathrooms are on the small side, but have all the amenities you've come to expect in a Japanese hotel. The location is difficult to find for taxis, so make sure you take a Japanese taxi card with you.
