“Its good, very good, but you pay for it”
Reviewed November 3, 2012

This is a high-class, up-market and expensive hotel which has excellent levels of service, reasonable facilities (though not great) and a "fair" location. Its a short walk from Shinagawa railway station, which is a major hub with trains going in all directions and it also makes it easy to get to from Narita airport - a single train journey of about an hour, which is as much as one would want do after a long-haul to Tokyo. The facilities are fine, probably better than fine actually, but there's no pool and the gym is a couple of treadmills, a couple of bicycle machines and a weights machine. Every time you turn your back while in the lobby or reception area and there's somebody to help but in a way you come to expect that in Japan though in this hotel they do it better with genuine smiles and welcomes.

So why only 4 stars rather than 5 ? Its just the cost really. It was an expensive 2 nights, even pre-booked in advance with the no-cancel option. Breakfast was indeed a great buffet and I even had dinner which was superb but a hundred euro for brekkie and dinner is just a bit outside my range, so I give it 4 because its a 4 from me. If you've got the budget and can afford it then its a 5.

Room Tip: Take the East exit from Shinagawa for the shortest route

Dear HI---fan---Dub,

Thank you very much for your recent stay with us and for taking the time to share your review with the Trip Advisor community.

The strong yen is certainly affecting our restaurants in terms of perception of value, and our restaurants are positioned as upscale restaurants. Our restaurant prices are comparable to similar classed restaurants throughout Tokyo and The Dining Room, our global all day dining offers great value business lunch courses from JPY 2520, light meals starting from JPY 2310 and main course from JPY 3150. With over 300 restaurants within 5 minutes from the hotel and another 190,000 in Tokyo our Concierge team are available to assist guests with any enquiries.

We look forward to serving you again, hopefully in the not too distant future.

Kind regards,

Ben Johnson

This is my third visit to this hotel this year, and the prevalent quality in terms of friendly attentive service, beautifully serene yet incredibly functional facility retains it's excellent consistency. In addition I was blown away by the fact that they apparently have addressed the two requests I had in my previous posting by adding additional state of the art cardio equipment to the gym and now serving (on request without any additional charge) fabulous freshly prepared oatmeal which was the last element missing from the already outstanding breakfast buffet. I was truly blown away by their responsiveness!

This hotel has it all - from welcome to good bye and everything in between. Stayed twice in a book-end of a trip to Japan. Location at Shinagawa is not to be beaten for access from Narita or as a base. Ben the concierge is the one of the world's best. Service is 5 star totally and completely. You enter from the 26th floor to the open and expansive lobby with water feature, sculpture, dining area and calm, light wooden architecture. 2 restaurants - main and China Shadow. Room was beautiful. Comfortable king bed, feather pillows, ceiling to floor windows, comfortable seating area. We had 2 different rooms, one over Shinagawa, the 2nd facing Tokyo Bay. Get the Tokyo Bay facing room - just a jaw dropping view. Bathroom is well appointed and large. (Wish InterContinental would dump Elemis as their toiletry brand). Breakfast is a huge buffet with eastern and western options - great bacon, eggs, omlet and goodies. If you are Club InterCon, the happy hour is fine and welcome. Housekeeping is quiet, effecient and inobtrusive. Go local and try the small yakatori bars, sushi and izakayas within walking distance. The Strings is a very special place. In the midst of Tokyo this is an oasis.

Room Tip: Club Room, Tokyo Bay facing

Our entire hotel team have been working extremely hard to constantly improve both our service and hotel and we were recently awarded the 2012 World Travel Award for “Japan’s Leading Hotel” for the third year. I am pleased that you enjoyed my personal service and thank you very much for the endorsement and I look forward to being of service on your next visit.

Excellent business hotel
Always seems quite and never busy
Food is very good - breakfast is great: the guy making omelettes with chopsticks is fun
Quick walk to the Shinagawa train station
Easy access to locla restaurants if you can be bothered to leave

The gym is small but never too busy.
Service is nothing short of perfect.

Room Tip: I have not had a bad room.

From the moment I arrived to the moment I left I was impressed by this hotel. I travel a lot and see a lot of hotels that claim to be special but aren't; the staff at The Strings make it special.

The front desk, restaurant and housekeeping people are all really nice. Special mention goes to Ben, the concierge, who organized my life while I was there and helped me get the most out of my limited non-business time.

It is an expensive place but it is in a fabulous location, next to the train station, and just the kind of hotel that it is lovely to come back to after a long day.

We picked the hotel as a convenient staging post on a recent trip to Japan. As most of our trip was outside of Tokyo, we wanted somewhere to stay for one night on our arrival, and two nights before our departure. We were travelling around the country by rail, so the Shinagawa JR station location was perfect. And as it turned out, so was the hotel!

As Intercontinental's go its a smaller one: a self contained bubble inside the top 10 floors of an office tower block. Once inside it's impressive, with a central void / attrium extending all the way up the middle of the building. We got an upgrade to a corner room both times, which was a good size and beautifully furnished in IC style. Service was impeccable. Breakfast was included in our rate on the second stay, and was decent but not opulent.

In terms of IC's in Tokyo, I would definitely recommend this over the ANA Intercontinental in Akasaka: the service, rooms and atmosphere is better. Only the building itself is less grand.

Dear Guest,

We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and thank you for your compliments about us. Our hotel is the most conveniently located hotel in Tokyo with direct access via covered walkway to Shinagawa station which is serviced by Narita and Haneda Airport express trains, bullet trains and several other JR lines such as the Yamanote line.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Tokyo in the near future.

We stayed for 2 nights at the hotel. Transfer from airport via train was easy. JR trainstation Shinagawa is connected with the hotel and a 4 minute walk und a roof. Shinagawa is a good station to start to explore the city.
The daily stream of the businesspeople in suits is incredible and it seems never ending. The hotel is like an oasis (only 6 floors) surrounded by the busy town. (Shops, restaurants, foodcourts etc very close at the very entrance you'll find an seven eleven) A Dean and Deluca just at the entrance to the station.
Early check-in at 11 was possible and was not charged. We didn't try the hotel restaurants. Fitness ist open 24/24.
Especially nice is the large bathroom!

Room Tip: Take a room with a view over the railway station. You will feel like a little child playing with you...

Dear brucewife,

It is fantastic to hear that you enjoyed your stay and thank you very much for the 5/5 rating.

Our hotel is an oasis of calm after experiencing the buzz of Tokyo’s hectic pace in our prime location. Shinagawa station sees over 600,000 commuters pass through daily and from the rooms does look like a big train set! We look forward to welcoming you back to Tokyo in the near future.
