“A small but well structured excellent museum”
Reviewed May 26, 2013

There are many museums in Toyo and most of the private owned museums are well financed and often the monuments of modern Japanese architecture. Suntory Museum of Art is one of those. When we visited this museum the exhibition was titled "Mono no Aware and Japanese Beauty". In this exhibition all these pieces of art express the changes in the nature, e.g. the landscape with birds, the plants, insects, people and the moon, that are beautifully reflecting spring, summer autumn and winter in Japan. The exhibition was quiet and well structured that it was very comfortable to look around. It is recommendable to take advantage of English audio guide (JPY 500.-) so that you do not miss small and fantastic details of each piece of art. The museum is located in the "Tokyo Midtown" which is not very far from the Roppongi crossing and “Tokyo Midtown” itself is also highly interesting to look around.
Tokyo Midtown is a modern complex which includes office, residential, commercial, hotel, and various leisure spaces. As far as I known the tallest building in Tokyo is also a part of it.

“A welcome relief from Tokyo's big museums”
Reviewed May 22, 2013

Tokyo has many great museums, but he big ones are often rather exhausting to trail around and it can be hard to see an exhibition properly if you are endlessly granny-dodging. The Suntory Museum is in Tokyo Midtown, a fantastic complex of shops and amenities well worth a visit itself, and it is small, quiet and you can really focus on what you are seeing and appreciate it. A today's exhibition there was also an English earphone guide(at the tokyo national museum the objects are labelled in English but that's about it). Suntory has fantastic collections and is all worth a visit.

“Sense of the Ephemeral”
Reviewed May 18, 2013

When I visited the Suntory Museum, the current exhibit was titled "Mono no aware" which roughly translates to "a sense of the ephemeral". The exhibit focused on how Japanese art can provide a sense of how things change, e.g., seasonal change or the changes in life. It was a good exhibit with some very fine art. The environment of the Suntory museum is a bit jarring, on the third floor of a busy shopping center in Roppongi. The location just didn't go with the delicate theme of the exhibit. It's a short walk from the Roppongi subway station. Admission fee is a bit high at 1300 yen. I highly recommend the audio tour, though there is adequate English labeling.

“Nice museum with usually good exhibits”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

The Suntory Museum, now located in the rather new Mid-town Center in Roppongi is a gem in the area. The museum has a small collection of their own but have mounted some excellent exhibits over the past 5 years that they have been open in this new location. The current exhibit is great and even has English language audio guides available to rent.

It is located in the North end of the Mid-town center with access by the Oedo or Hibiya subway lines. The Mid-town Center has lots of shops, mostly high priced merchandise, and a large number of resturants which span a number of price points.

It makes for a good day trip and frankly I find their exhibits to generally be far more interesting and better presented and more interesting than the ones in the Mori Museum or the National Art Center which is a huge ongoing disaster.
