“keep an eye out for this one”
Reviewed December 7, 2013

how we experience art, design, and beauty is of course very personal but for me this gallery / museum created one of the most powerful impressions I've had in Japan

yes it's a beautiful building and yes it's the result of a collaboration between Japanese artists like Tadao Ando and Issey Miyake, but what did it for me was the wonderful exhibition going on at the time

it was "TEMA HIMA: the Art of Living in Tohoku" (search on 21 21 Design Sights web side for a description and pictures) focusing of life, crafts and seasons in northern Japan. So beautiful that I spent probably 3-4 hours looking at artefacts and photos and films, then came back for a second serving a couple of months later - best 2000 yen I've ever spent!

so have a look at the exhibitions currently hosted if you're in Tokyo or planning to go, this museum can add a completely new dimension to your visit.

“Not worth the admission price”
Reviewed November 30, 2013 via mobile

I was terribly underwhelmed by this place. It was small and uninspiring and the exhibits were trying just so hard to be cool, but failed miserably. The worst use of 1000 yen I have spent in Japan

“Engaging and Remarkable Design Program”
Reviewed November 9, 2013

The building alone is worth a look from the outside if you are in the area. The interior galleries are limited to just a few with one central exhibition point. What was programmed in the main gallery was highly engaging and thoughtful, worthy of what one would expect to see at a leading design museum. We spent at least an hour interacting with the different pieces and watching films. This is not a museum for everyone as the design of the building and art resonate with those who enjoy thinking about art through design and different lenses.

“Great example of Tadao Ando”
Reviewed November 3, 2013

Very unique design by Tadao Ando. Worth visiting. It is in back courtyard of Tokyo Mid-town high end mall and the Ritz. In the courtyard they usually have beer, wine, food stalls and can stroll over for a nice outdoors snack.

“Gray cement a la Ando Tadao”
Reviewed October 21, 2013

Ando's buildings are invariably gray cement and predictable. Why he is so celebarted remains a mystery. The galleries are ...like galleries everywhere.
