how we experience art, design, and beauty is of course very personal but for me this gallery / museum created one of the most powerful impressions I've had in Japan
yes it's a beautiful building and yes it's the result of a collaboration between Japanese artists like Tadao Ando and Issey Miyake, but what did it for me was the wonderful exhibition going on at the time
it was "TEMA HIMA: the Art of Living in Tohoku" (search on 21 21 Design Sights web side for a description and pictures) focusing of life, crafts and seasons in northern Japan. So beautiful that I spent probably 3-4 hours looking at artefacts and photos and films, then came back for a second serving a couple of months later - best 2000 yen I've ever spent!
so have a look at the exhibitions currently hosted if you're in Tokyo or planning to go, this museum can add a completely new dimension to your visit.
