“Some of the best soba in town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

I went here together with a friend who used to work nearby. Not easy to find as the place isn't advertised on the road and in a fairly dead area around Toranomon and Atago. Easiest to spot at lunchtime when there's a long queue in front. The owners make the soba themselves - and their variety is very chewy. I prefer their beef option with sesame seeds, see weed and onions. Great value at JPY 850. The atmosphere of the place is great - very dark. No seating options, so not a place for long dinners (closes at 8pm, too, and only open Mon-Fri).

“Tasty soba on a budget or in a hurry!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 1, 2010

This place is not located in a tourist hot spot so you will only find the locals and mainly worker from around the area dinning at this extremely ambiguous, hidden, almost “ninja” style like restaurant. I say “ninja” because the whole entire shop front is painted black with a long narrow window bisecting the front wall (truly mysterious). What also entices the curious mind is its tiny name plate no larger than A4 size paper which is also painted black with gold writing and the mile long queue stretching around the corner during lunch-time.

Anyway on to the food! This restaurant only sells soba noodles (hot & cold) with only 5-7 variations. As a bunch of carnivores we chose the chicken and beef soba both about 800yens each (one size). Once you have purchased your ticket at the till you are still queuing up to pick up your food served as if you were to collect school dinners. Meanwhile eyeing up for any available spaces because there is only one large square table in the centre of the room with no chairs, so you will be standing while eating unless you can squeeze yourself in a corner where a couple of stalls are available. Both noodle portions are the same in size (LARGE, about two packets of instant noodle) and eaten like if it was tsukemen (noodle n soup separate). Beef was mixed in with the soba and seaweed with a very flavorsome cold broth (really good) and however the chicken was actually in the broth served hot and slightly spicy (equally tasty)! Dotted around the table, bowls of tempura bits, raw egg and spring onions are free for you to customize your bowl of delicious soba noodles.

The pace inside was very quick, not sure if it was lunch time so people need to be back but I saw men and women devouring the whole thing within minutes without getting as much as a speck on their white shirt, truly master class! Dragged into this pace I also finished mine within minutes but didn’t really get to enjoy the experience of eating. As soon as I moved from my standing spot another person instantly took my place which gives you an idea of this restaurant’s turnover and popularity.

This place is truly different from what I have experienced (maybe not if I was Japanese), great tasting cheap soba noodle when your in a hurry! Highly recommend it to all students or poor medics around Jeikei Hospital.
