APA Hotel Tokyo Shiomi Ekimae

Good for a Disneyland trip. Just next to Shiomi station on the Keiyo line (but you have to walk a long way [more than 5 minutes] from the upper levels of Tokyo Station to get to Keiyo underground level platforms). Good spa. Clean but small rooms (smaller than Toyoko Inn?). Host with respect all foreign guests, including the Chinese. They might become upset to find the hotel's magazine promoting rightist ideas in each room. The CEO (not the entire staff) of this good hotel chain has a rightist philosophy and gave an award to a rightist military official (who lost his job for it). Politics aside, this is a good clean budget hotel.

We all know the Disney Land hotels are well over-priced. So this hotel is extremely reasonable and is close to the station.

The plus points are that a double room cost us only about 8000yen for the night. The onsen was busy, but pleasant enough.

Generally, the hotel was very clean. And our room was very clean. Except for what seemed to be a single pubic hair on the telephone!

The room was very small. And the walls were thin. I could hear some rather 'adult' sounds in the corridor when I returned from the onsen. Not that that is a problem for me! But I guess it could be a little problematic if you are staying with your kids. Or if you are a couple staying, and rather shy, you may not want to 'shout it loud - shout it proud'.

This hotel is very clean and located within 5 mins walk to Shiomi Station. From Narita Airport, you can use the Keisei Airport Bus to Keihin Makuhari Station, then transfer the train direct to Shiomi Station without need to walk very far with your luggage. The bus cost 1400 yen and the train ticket was about 500 yen. This is a better option than transfering at the Tokyo Station which involves a very long walk with your luggages. There are convenient stores and a supermarket near the hotel. A few Japanese eating outlets are 3-5 minutes walk away providing meals at 400-650 yen range. Overall this hotel is great for a few days' stay. Tokyo station is just a few stops away. Some staff at the reception speaks manageable English but not all. Rooms a little small but this is the norm in Japan. Internet is good.

I picked this hotel because our flight landed at 8:30pm in the evening and we were headed for Kyoto the next day. So we want to be close enough to Tokyo Station. All other hotels around Tokyo Station was fully booked.

THE CHALLENGE
The challenge I faced was, after booking, I had no clue how to get from Narita to the hotel. The hotel's website is unclear as well. So I posted on tripadvisor's forum, a tad too late. I had already booked the return NEX+Suica package @ JPY55,000.
The walk from Tokyo Station to JR Keiyo Line is a long walk, and you have to make sure you don't have too much luggage.

A Tripadvisor forum user suggested this better and cheaper alternative by take a bus direct from Narita to Kahin-Makuhari (costs 450 yen) which stops directly at the JR station where you can easily transfer to the JR Keiyo line to Shiomi station.

LOCATION
-Located in a lovely quiet residential area. It has a local feel
-Train stop: JR Keiyo line - Shiomi Station. This is not one of the rapid stops. So you need to take the local train by waiting for the BLUE train
-Metro stop: None within walking distance. To access to metro, you have to take the JR train to Hatchobori to transfer.

HOTEL
-Feels like a 4-star hotel. The decor is classier than Toyoko Inn's
-We stayed in a double non-smoking room. Room is small! Comparable to Toyoko Inn's but the decor is much classier again.
-It has a HUGE flat screen TV. Loved it! Limited TV channels.
-Beds are softer than Toyoko Inn's...comfortable!
-Blackout curtains (which Toyoko does not have)
-The BEST of all : The onsen on the 2nd floor. There is indoor and outdoor onsen. LOVED it!! After a tiring day, the onsen makes a BIG difference.

CONCLUSION
If you are out sighseeing ALL the time, stay in this hotel. We paid JPY6,000 (without breakfast) for the night, booked thru Rakuten. I think it is very very worth it. It gives Toyoko Inn a run for its money. The only downside is that the location. Just connect at Hatchabori using Suica...and you'd be fine! I would stay here again.

Best hotel I stayed in during my trip in Japan. It's located a bit outside the city centre but easy to get to from Tokyo station (10min) by JR Railway. If you have the railpass it's a great place to stay as there are plenty of trains per hour and they are not too busy.

The hotel is very clean and has free internet in each room. Coin laundry and tumble drier are available. And there is a pay as you go internet station in the lobby. Staff were very helpful and friendly.

It can be on the dear side (over 10000Yen) but I got it a lot cheaper through the internet. Definitely a good choice!

Highly recommened if you want to save loads of cash while in Tokyo. It is a small train ride from Tokyo Station (Shiomi, on JR line). The hotel is right next to train station. And there is a grocery store next to train station as well. For a vegetarian on a budget, this is a great combination. I got a great deal on this hotel last minute from rakuten web site.

Room I stayed in was small (well everything in Japan is), but fits one person comfortably. And their onsen (public bath) is super! One big one indoors and 2 small ones outdoors. I enjoyed it to a great extent.

The hotel staff is super helpful, albeit a little english challenged. And hotel has a feel of a 4 star hotel. Also the hotel is next to Disney land (though I didn't visit).

Overall a super deal.
