Hotel Monterey Ginza
Ranked #16 of 94 Hotels / Ryokan in Chuo
Reviewed May 5, 2013

Our trip to Japan ended in Tokyo mainly to do some shopping. We chose this hotel for the Ginza location. Unfortunately our stay coincided with Japan's Golden Week vacation period so hotel rooms at reasonable prices were impossible to find. However the Monterey Ginza was priced substantially below what we normally pay in the Ginza area (10K less Yen). And for this trip the price difference was greater.

The price is great but the twin room size of 200 square feet is limiting. Prior to this the smallest Tokyo hotel room we occupied was 275 square feet. What a difference! If you have more then 2 pieces of luggage you should ask the hotel to remove the small table and chair.

Ok done with the main issues; the great "price" and the bad "room size."

The service from the front desk to the maid service was excellent especially since communicating in English is never an issue at this hotel. The location is excellent especially for those who like shopping. Restaurants are in abundance including many in the department stores and office buildings. The bean bag pillow is very hard but I got use to it after the second night and it was a very quiet room. The maids kept our room very clean. However when cleaning they left most of the rooms open so cigarette smells daily entered our room. I don't know if hotel has non smoking floors...ask before booking if this is an issue.

Overall we would stay at this hotel again if price difference is similar to this trip.

Room Tip: Twin rooms are larger

Very Happy with our stay with Monterey Hotel Ginza.Centrally located with food and shops nearby.Room was on small side compared to western hotels, but was clean. Bedding somewhat harder that what we are used to at home. An embarrasing smell in bathroom left by previous occupant was quickly sorted, but should have been recognised prior to our arrival. Staff were friendly and very willing to help. We would recommend hotel Monterey to others to stay at in Ginza.

Reasonably priced, clean, and a great central location. Near the tokyo central train station and there are also many small, fun restaurants in the area. The ginza area is a bit more upscale, so if you are backpacking, it may not be what you are looking for. However, it is a great jumping off point in central Tokyo.

Hotel Monterey Ginza is just two blocks from Ginza main avenue where you find all luxury stores and also close to an entry of the Ginza Itchome station (even if you need to walk 300 meters under ground to reach the entrance of the tickets machine and access to the platform!!!).
The hotel is rather comfortable ; the room and bathroom are clean; prices are competitive.
The week point, as in many hotels in Tokyo, is that the space is limited, and worse, almost no space, no drawers to store your personal belongings. When you plan to stay two weeks in Tokyo, you can imagine the problem. The luggages cannot be stored, etc...
When reserving, ask for twin rooms (a little more space), and avoid double room (the bed is pushed against a wall...)
This apart, the hotel can be a good choice if you don't have too many belongings with you.
For the breakfast, shop at the grocery store accross the street to have your coffee and rolls in your room!

Room Tip: ask for twin rooms

The Monterey Ginza is just a 15 minutes walk from Tokya Station and easy to find without help. We jusst looked it up on Google maps and counted the traffic lights :=) Street names in Japan is no idea to try to understand...
The hotel is modern, very clean with quick service. Descent pricing on the minibar, room size ok. The toilet is a hightech marvel with functions such as antismell, bide, shower with adjustable water strength and a heated seat!
Only complaint is that the bed was to hard for my back. Price of the room was very competative.

This hotel exceeded my expectations. We paid about Y15000 per night for a twin during April which was a busy period.

Positives - location (close to ginza and not far off Chuo Dori, big main shopping street; 10 min walk or so to Yuracho (home of muji and loft), 20 min walk to tokyo station), convenience stores across the road, friendly staff, discount metro card (for non-toei lines, - bargain Y1000 for unlimited metro over 2 days - according to the Metro site you can usually only get this at the airport... so I was pleasantly surprised), big room for a twin, large bathroom, neat and tidy and clean, fast lan internet (free), walk distance to Tsukiji, european "french"/"art deco" styling

Negatives - no free breakfast (as we were so accustomed to), no 'eco' plans (common in Japan where the hotel will give you a slight discount to encourage you to reuse sheets etc for short stays)

First when you ask about the location of this hotel, the only answer is prime location, perfect for those who like shopping or window shopping. Need a train ride? just walk you are already at Ginza Itchome. Second value for what you paid, very convenient accommodation, very clean and comfortable. That's what we usually need when staying in a hotel. Hotel staffs are very friendly.
