Sotetsu Fresa Inn Tokyo Kyobashi
Ranked #17 of 94 Hotels / Ryokan in Chuo
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 16, 2013 via mobile

Sotetsu is situated about a block from the nearest subway station, and within walking distance of Ginza and Tokyo Station. Depending on your needs, it's excellent. We stayed one night before going to Narita, to do some last minute shopping before leaving Japan. We had a triple room which was a little small if we would have stayed a long time (with two small kids and one teenager).
We were very happy with the hotel room in terms of standard, heat during wintertime etc.

Yes, room is not big, but comfortable enough for a family. We booked the triple room, and all of us stayed comfortably in it. The beds were a bit hard, but comfortable to sleep on. They have free tea and coffee after 3 pm, and a lot of ammenities to get in the lobby. Free wifi in the lobby and inside the room. Very close to subways, and Tokyo station is just 10 mnts walk. We can go anywhere from there. A lot of places to eat around the hotel, and there is a family mart in the corner. Ginza brand street is just 10 mnts walk, we went there almost every night, just to enjoy the illumination and christmas decorations. Nice hotel and very recomended to friends.

As many have said - if you expect large rooms in Japan - stay at a big chain hotel. The rooms are small compared to Western style but for the location, price and convenience - who cares. I wasn't expecting much as for the Xmas/nye period, this was very cheap compared to other hotels nearby.... However I was surprised. The room is fine, bed comfortable, staff were polite, and great location - about 10 min walk from Tokyo station. Personally I prefer to stay around Maihama, however couldn't find somewhere there for under $500/night, and we stayed here for 4 nights for the cost of one night in Maihama - not complaining! Overall happy with the hotel and would come back.

This is very well located hotel that is attractively priced. It is clean and modern and comfortable, and has some useful features like vending machines, washer/dryer, coffee machine in the lobby. The rooms are very small, but for the price and location that is to be expected. The hotel does have a few surprising, annoying features. While there are many foreign guests, the hotel seems resolutely focused on Japanese clientele--front desk staff is polite but do not speak English well; some minor rigid rules (e.g. penalty for checking out even 10 minutes late, also for losing your plastic key); no English channels on TV; the coffee machine is closed in the morning, clearly to get people to go downstairs for (poor) breakfast etc. The one thing that stands between good and excellent in this hotel seems to be management's attitude toward the guests.

Room Tip: Considering the small size of the rooms, pick the largest available even at a higher price

I'll start by saying that all hotels in Japan are small compared to Western standards. I do not count this against them. If tons of space is what you need, you should go to one of the major chains and pay a fortune.

We were looking for a place close to Tokyo Station, as we had an early flight and didn't want to have to go far to catch the train to the airport. Sotetsu was the only reasonably priced hotel (~$150/night) under 1 mile away. Everything else in the area is really expensive; meant more for business travelers. It's only about a 10 minute walk from the Yaesu South Gate near the JR bus lines. The hotel was a little difficult to find, as the reservation lobby is on the second floor an not visible from the street. If you get to the Takaracho Subway Station, you went too far.

We were pleasantly surprised that the room looked modern and comfortable. It was very quiet and clean, and there is free wifi in the lobby. There is also a ridiculous amount of free amenities available in the lobby (tea, coffee, toiletries, etc...). The staff was courteous and spoke enough english to take care of any reservation needs (but not much else).

Note that around tokyo station is a business area. There isn't much night life or restaurants; you'll need to go to another area like shinjuku for that. However, you have access to virtually every train line from tokyo station, so it's very easy to get around.

Bottom line: Sotetsu is a good economical choice if you want to be near Tokyo Station. If you don't need to be as close, you can save a little more money staying in another area. However, I'd definitely stay here again.
