“Great sushi, without having to wait 2 hours”
Reviewed June 6, 2012

By the time we finished the 2nd Tuna auction, the line at Sushi-Dai was 2 hour long and we needed to catch a train. Okame is the last sushi bar on the same alley as Sushi Dai and we saw quite a few local market people, with their rubber boots eating their breakfast there so we decided to give it a try, what turned out to be a very good decision.
While we didn't try sushi-Dai and can't compare, this was one of the best sushi we ever had. Fresh, firm and very different from what we are used to eat in the west. The Toro is highly recommended!
At 3600 yen for the Okame this isn't cheap per se, but definitely worth it! And the chefs even speaks a little bit of English.

“Excellent sushi, without the line.”
Reviewed April 25, 2012

Sushi-dai and Daiwa-sushi next door get all the guidebook press, and have the lines to show for it. We decided against growling our stomachs for an hour, and instead found four seats immediately at Okame at 8:00 AM, no problem. It was a great decision.

We went to Okame near the beginning of our 2.5-week stay in Japan, and it kind of spoiled us for all subsequent sushi. My travel companion had previously decided that she didn't like uni (sea urchin) and ebi (shrimp), but this place changed her opinion on both; she even ordered seconds of uni :) The salmon was also different from all other salmon I've ever had. Instead of being fatty to the point of melting in your mouth, it actually had texture to enjoy, as well as taste.

The omakase menu at 3600 yen is probably near the top of what you'll see in Japanese sushi places in terms of cost performance. Highly recommended.
