This is an amazing German-style beer hall--complete with oompah band on the night I went. The Sapporo beer was reasonably priced, but the food a little less so. Still, you're there for the atmosphere, and the chance to meet some friendly locals.

A classic location, but surely not a very comfortable place because the crowds and lack space of space between seats. The food is rather mediocre. The beer is good.

4 stars for the sheer good fun. Food is averagely good. Easy to find on the main Ginza street. Have visited on each occasion we have been to Tokyo. If you are lucky you may even be incorporated into a Japanese group of businessmen who are letting there hair down as we were on one occasion. Germany took brewing to Japan when it opened in 19th century. It is better than the vast beer hall at the Sapporo Brewery in Sapporo. Always crowded, and tables close together, but generally seated quickly by highly efficient staff who swiftly provide beer and orders. Menu is mainly German style, sausages, eisbein (no schnitzels) and a mix of other international stuff eg paella, fish and chips etc, as well as some Japanese style food with a western hint - try the tiny firefly squid done French snail style with loads of garlic. German "oompah" music plays in the backround and then a group of unlikely Japanese ladies appear with classical instruments and play Beer Hall music as they wander around the Hall - great. Price for 2 with several jugs of medium and small beers each plus food at around Y6-7000. Excellent for a change yet it is really quite Japanese and not a tourist trap. Surprising how popular beer is in Japan.

You are in Ginza walking and don't know where to eat dinner. You see this old and classic place, you walk inside and you enter a surreal time machine. The decor is like a German Beer Keller from the 30s. It gave me a bit of second world war flashback. The waitresses looked funny with that dresses. This place has personality. A homeless shouted at us in our table, a beautiful girl said hello to me, the music was german sung in japanese. I ate a shrimp schnitzel, good. They also have red wine by the glass, it wasn't chilled but it was ok. We had a good time there. I'll remember Lion with a smile.
