Hotel Monterey Hanzomon

A nice place in Tokyo just in front of the Hanzomon subway station. Very quiet and comfortable and of course very clean (you are in Tokyo). The breakfast is buffet style and very good and will cost you 2100 yens.

The hotel is situated in a quiet area of Tokyo close to the imperial palace gardens, and a pleasant walk down-hill to the Central Rail Station in Central Nihonbashi. It is directly opposite Hanzomon underground. There is a good choice of local restaurants, cafes and bars and several 24 hour convenience stores and fast food outlets. It is a quiet and pleasant residential district.

Unfortunately despite my request I was placed in a smoking room; this is not the first time this has happened to me travelling in Japan. The room reeked of cigarette smoke. I was dismayed at having to pay an upgrade to another available non smoking room, and was not in any position to argue the point further, being tired from a 12 hour flight and the poor english standard of the check-in desk would have made any further discussion a fruitless pursuit.

The room otherwise was small (average size for Tokyo), clean and well equipped with tea, coffee, linen and toiletries. The Wifi was free and reception was good. The television showed only Japanese channels.

Adequate, but a previous stay in Grand Arc Hanzomon around the corner offers a much more pleasant experience and better value in a similar price bracket.

Some reviewers have provided what I think are misleading and inaccurate information.
Some have said there are no nearby restaurants. In fact, if you go out the front door of the hotel and turn left onto Otsuma St., going South, there are 15 restaurants within 2 blocks on this street, the first one 30 feet from the hotel.
Some complained of small rooms. In fact, there are 6 sizes of rooms, from 15 square meters to 27 square meters, with price rising accordingly from 17000 yen to 30000 yen, at this time (we are staying here right now). So if you want a bigger room you should book a bigger room. We are in a 20000 sq. meter room and it is fine.

Hotel was not hard to find from subway stop Hanzomon, being located directly opposite one of the exits. Reception staff were efficient though a smile would have helped. Rooms were clean and OK in size, though rather hot, and turning the thermostat to the 15C minimum did not make a difference - we were still sweating! Our bedroom walls could have done with some touching up with the painted walls scratched up. Bathroom looked recently decorated and we liked our black and white stripey bathroom though our friends upstairs in their stripey pink bathroom did not feel the same. No safe in the room and no free water, but robes and toiletries were provided. Although wifi is available in the rooms, there was no signal in our fourth floor room. We felt breakfast was overpriced and visited the convenience stores and French bakery which were all within a minutes walk from the hotel - there were even three convenience stores to choose from (one was a mini supermarket). A few places to eat nearby but not much in the area - best to hop onto the subway.

I went to Tokyo for a business trip and stayed here for 4 nights. I arrived quite early, around 4 hours before check-in time (3PM). Please be aware that most hotels in Japan will charge additional cost for early check-in. In my case, I had to pay ¥3000 for 3 hours early check in.

The hotel's location is very convenient, right in front of Hanzomon subway and 5 minutes walk to the Imperial Palace and foreign embassies. The location is quite safe as well, surrounded by office buildings and police station. It is also near many local (and thai and Indian) restaurants, and convenient stores. Other hip locations like Ginza and Shibuya are just 2-3 stops away by train, and Tokyo Station (the main train station which connects outer city line and Narita Express to the Narita airport) is just 7 minutes away by taxi which will cost you around ¥1,200 one way.

However it can be very quiet when it is pass 8PM, which I found it quite strange for a metropolitan city like Tokyo.

For the hotel itself, only a few staff could speak good English but I'm not surprised since not many people could speak English in Japan. However, they were very polite and nice.

No restaurants are available in the hotel and they set up a room in the main hall for buffet breakfast every morning. The breakfast menu was very standard and they will charge you ¥1,900. So make sure your bookings have included breakfast or you can easily go eat out or buy food at convenient stores right next to the hotel.

The size of the room was okay, not too big nor too small. I love the bathroom with its deep tub, abundant toilettries, and that fancy high-tech toilet (thank God it was written in English as well!). There was a water heater/dispenser in the room, but it took me 1 day to understand how to operate it. Don't forget to bring your adapter, as you have to leave a deposit of ¥1,000 if you forgot them and want to borrow them from the reception.

Strong wifi connection is available for free as well.

In overall, I like the hotel especially for business trip. But for those of you who come for holiday or experienced nightlife in Tokyo, I suggest you to stay in other areas like Shinjuku, Shibuya or Ginza.

It was my fifth time in the Hanzomon. And I enjoyed my stay. The hotel is very well located (close to Hanzomon and Tokyo station), calm and I can open the window to breath fresh air at night. And if you are a runner, the place is just 2 min away from a nice 5k loop.

We stayed four nights in a large double room, Two large beds made it possible to stay two children and two adults. The bathroom was also spacious. Everything was nice and clean, but the walls could need a dash of paint and plaster.

The area is quiet with offices and embassies. There is not much nightlife, but plenty of places to eat during the day and early evening. Metro (Hanzamon Station No. 5 on the purple Z-line) is just across the road from the hotel (remember to take exit 5 from the station). The subway can take you wherever you want. Taxis are also reasonable.

We did not eat breakfast at the hotel, but often at a French bakery just 20 meters up the street. There are also several convenience stores etc. close by.
