Owner description: A large, torii gate stands at the entrance to this shrine built in memory of those who lost their lives defending Japan. Many officials still come and offer prayer annually on August 15, the anniversary of Japan's defeat in World War II.

Had to visit due to controversy with Chinese over war heroes. Enjoyed the architecture of the shrine

This shrine is the center of controversy because it houses the spirits of Japan's WWII dead. However, the shrine itself is serene and beautiful. When my wife and I lived in Tokyo, we used to visit every Sunday for the antique markets and the occasional Shinto ceremonies.

Definitely worth a visit.

Who cares about political correctness?? This liberal American concept does not fit anywhere, not in the USA, and not here in Japan. So I enjoy every visit to the Yasukuni Shrine which is a beautiful place with a museum attached. Do not fail to perform the usual rites. Even if you are foreigner you are most welcome. And put down your name in the museum's impressive visitor book.

This is probably the most venerated place in Japan after the imperial palace. The Yasukuni shrine is where the spirits of the dead warriors reside, that aside it is a very interesting insight into the character of the nation
