“Magnificent Hotel - too expensive”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

Theer is no doubt that this is one of the best of many hotels that I have been in. Sheer professionalism from the minute you get there. The prices are just simply horrendous though. It is perfectly situated, has good connections - a bus to the airport and near the fabulous Akasaka Palace. In the area there are many bars and restaurants. The grounds of the hotel are just magnificant. But I will never stay there again because of the experience of breakfast - although nice - just to full of people and forget any service - and it is just too expensive!

I have been using the New Otani fairly regularly for more than 20 years with most of my visits free to me as I was travelling on business. Now that I pay my own bills I have tried cheaper places but they just don't have the same class so I have bitten the bullet and pay the price. The refurbished Main building has brought the fabric up to modern standards, while remaining classy and understated. The New Otani doesn't do flash. The young women on reception are as charming as ever and almost everyone in the hotel, provided you don't speak as if to a native speaker, so keep it slow and clear, understands English well enough to help with whatever you desire.

The wonderful garden marks the hotel out from everywhere else in the city and even in Kyoto there is nowhere where you can find an ancient and magnificent garden without leaving the hotel. The hotel is vast which some people may not like but on wet days it is possible to browse quite a range of shops without leaving the hotel. Restaurant prices are well beyond my purse but I can't resist having breakfast in the lounge that overlooks the garden. There is a good range of more reasonably priced restaurants close to the back exit of the hotel.

It is very convenient to stay in this hotel, many restaurants and shops available inside the building, an ancient Japanese garden, and a fantastic view on Tokyo if you have breakfast at the top floor (you are just above the royal family palace). There are always taxis available at the front door and excellent service from all the people working in the hotel. A very good patisserie at the entrance where you can buy a piece of cake and enjoy it in your room

Room Tip: Ask for the corner rooms from where you can have a very nice new on the town

I loved the situation of this hotel - within about 300 metres of one of the best subway stations in Tokyo (Asakasa Mitsuke). With the aid of the fabulous subway (very easy to use, even for complete novices like ourselves), we zipped around Tokyo like veterans.

Our room was excellent - plenty of storage space and one of those really great Japanese bathrooms. They weren't cheap, but then can you find a really good, cheap hotel in Tokyo, especially one so well-placed?

Staff were constantly helpful and sufficiently fluent in English to ensure no problems.

The hotel is on the Narita Airport shuttle bus service, which makes it easy and economical to get back to the Airport for your flight, with a dedicated airconditioned waiting room for you when you wait for the shuttle to arrive.

As usual in Japan, unless money is no object, you wouldn't think of eating in the hotel. We ate throughout at the fabulous, reasonably priced noodle and ramen restaurants which abound in Tokyo.

I would heartily recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: The hotel has two towers. We were in "The Main", which I think is slightly more convenient...

I had a reservation for Friday and Sunday nights. obviously I needed a Saturday night stay as well. Checked in at 13:00 Friday. I spent the next 24 hrs attempting to extend my reservation on Saturday. I paid Peninsula prices to stay Saturday night only to be awaken on Sunday to be told I had to check out at ten am then I can check back in at 17:00 on the same day.

This hotel is old, tired, dirty, and terrible. I lived in Japan and Thailand and I am quite respectful of different culture and customs. This hotel takes ten minutes to get outside. This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in anywhere on earth. I have travelled around the globe and would not recommend this to anyone.

Location is great; service is awful. I am so stressed out staying here and have not slept in two days from the hotel harassing me. I am pissed off beyond belief.

Room Tip: Hotel is awful. do not stay here

Good hotel. Rooms are perfect, with space, all equipment, internet (not free though), a few restaurant (breakfast either at the top of the tower or in front of the garden). Many restaurants in the building for a large choice. Close subway and taxi stations.

From arrival on the airport limo bus from Narita (about 75 minute journey after 30 minute wait), the staff welcome was first class, even though communication in English is somewhat limited.

The reception, lobby and restaurant areas are appropriate for an upscale hotel, although as a first time visitor to Japan i was somewhat surprised by the cost of food and drink (even after reading other reviews) that is way above Four Seasons pricing in US for half size portions. Get out of the hotel and into the city, but suggest you have a basic phrase book at hand, otherwise prepare to point and gesture.

The Japanese gardens with coy carp fish ponds are sensational, so well worth a wander after arrival from a 14 hour flight to relax in a city oasis. Took a look at the pool but decided it wasn't worth the fee.

Location wise the hotel gives you great access to the entire city, but beware that taxi's are also very expensive so plan an itinerary in advance to avoid jumping around the city or perhaps venture into the subway.

With my wife and daughter accompanying me, we decided to take a triple room in the Garden Tower. This provided the equivalent of a compact junior suite in US that allowed space for luggage, a sofa and a separate sleeping area which was beneficial as i suffer with jet-lag so I didn't disturb the family while watching the olympics at 2am.

The room decor is dated, but clean, with a very slight hint/aroma of smoke (according to my wife, who once moved room four times in New York due to smoke, this time we didn't move). The AC in the room was ok, but in the hotel itself it was non-existent with corridors feeling like saunas.

For any workout warriors, head to the main building on level 3 for a much better fitness room than the room in the Tower (no charge at both) or do the smart thing by running from the hotel for a circuit (approx. 7Km) of the Imperial Palace gardens before breakfast. Enjoyed our breakfast buffet on the 40th floor but at over $100, it was a one-time visit in a 3 day stay.

Free wifi in the lobby or wired in the room (not very good for an iPad). Suggest you grab snacks and drinks in the shops in the tiny mall network underneath the property or head into the adjoining business tower called Garden Court where restaurant prices are about 50% the cost of the hotel equivalent and excellent.

With a refresh on the rooms, i would have scored this hotel a four and would consider staying again depending on price available at the time.
