“English speaking Izakaya restaurant in Japan - any good?”

We visited Andy's (Shin-Hinomoto) at Yurakucho, on the spur of the moment after reading some reviews. This was after a few days of blundering into Japanese speaking only restaurants and ordering "random" food (which turned out excellently and was fun - but that is another story). I had a bit of unspoken misgiving - can an "english speaking" Izakaya place owned by a Brit no less, be "authentic" and serve good Izakaya?

We showed up on a Thursday evening at about 7pm - restaurant was full and seating was by reservation only. But somehow, Andy and his lovely staff managed to squeezed us into a booth and accommodated us. The staff was very nice about everything and they came by with recommendations and pointers - we had so much food and all at a very reasonable (relative to other Izakaya places in Tokyo) price too! And yes to the question - Andy's rocks and is authentic! Love love love the food there....!

The restaurant isnt anything to shout about, but that's exactly it - it has its own charm in its "rustic-ness". I seldom recommend as assertively as this - if you like Izakaya, this is a must go to place! (the sashimi was so fresh!)

A friend of mine is a pilot in Japan. He has been going here for years. I've now been twice on two separate trips - second time was last week. Food is amazing, decor is ghastly - but adds to the novelty, Andy is superbly friendly as is his wife. Restaurant is located underneath a railway line, ceilings are maybe 7ft high and pipes are exposed; it is very close to BIC Camera. The restaurant is very small; everyone is jammed into a very small area - people smoke freely. Remember it is cash only! If this hasn't scared you away yet - you will be suprememly rewarded by the food. Very simple, very fresh and well prepared. Sauteed mushrooms - don't miss, sashimi - wow. Andy goes to the fish market every morning - so the fish doesn't get any fresher than this. Beer selection is great; amazing meal. Enjoy! Two of us had Guiness and dinner =Y7200. Oh, you must make a reservation. Our reservation was at 5:30 and the restaurant was full by 5:35. Walk ins not accepted.

“The crab, the crab, the HUGE crab”

we were 8 people and had a really good dinner. sashimi, tempura and of course the crab. One crab was enough meat for eight. It was huge, still fantastic taste. We loved it. Bear in 1 litre glasses (sejdlar) just made the evening even better ( in Tokyo many restaurant especially the italian ones serve beer in glases better suited for white wine) The place is great, rustic, no glamour and reasonable prices under the railway. This was are second visit the first time we had a very good selection of small dishes, great value.

We had been told off the restaurant in Ginza by our travel agent. The owner ANDY (english ex-pat) and his wife speak good English. Food mostly Japanese, fresh, we loved the TEMPURA. We went at 5pm and wanted a table at 7.30. It was fully booked (another good sign) but Andy's wife squeezed us in. A hive of activity, good choice of beers & other drinks. Overall very reasonable and Ideally placed 100metres from Peninsular hotel and near subway.
