“Very Good Hotel, Convenient Location”
Reviewed November 23, 2013

I stayed for 4 nights and found the hotel to be very nice and in a very convenient location. It is convenient to many of the major attractions while also being in a fairly quite area a couple blocks away from a main road. It is an easy trip from Narita airport using public transportation. Take the Keisei Skyliner train to Nippori Station and change to the Chuo Line to Ochanamizu Station. There, change to the Sobu Line and get off at Suidobashi station. From there, it is less than a 5 minute walk Southeast to Hotel Niwa. Overall, it took slightly over an hour.

Note that it is possible to take the "ordinary" train on the Keisei line instead of the Keisei Skyliner. However, this takes 70 minutes as compared to 40 for the Skyliner (meaning it would take about 90 minutes in total to get to Hotel Niwa). The Skyliner costs 2,400 yen vs. 1,200 for the ordinary train (roughly USD $24 and USD $12, respectively).

The front desk clerks spoke very good English and were polite and efficient during both check-in and check-out. My room had a full bed and was a fairly small room but that is to be expected in Tokyo. The room was well appointed and the bed was comfortable. No view to speak of from the windows other than the roof of an adjacent building, but this was not a big issue to me. The WiFi was free and provided very good connection speed. There was a safe located in a drawer that was big enough to hold my laptop as well as several other small electronic devices. I also enjoyed the two massage chairs that are in the "Relaxation Room" after spending days walking around the city.

One of the major advantages of the location is that it is within a short walk of both Suidobashi station (where it's possible to take the Toei line and JR trains) and Jinbocho station, which is on the Metro. Given each of these lines has a different operator and fare system, having easy access to all three systems within walking distance of the hotel definitely makes a difference if you'll be traveling around the city a lot. There is a Starbucks close by in Meets Port which is across the street to the North of Suidobashi station and next to the Tokyo Dome. This was another plus, at least from my perspective. There are also several 7-11 stores within a short walk.

There are also a lot of inexpensive restaurants nearby on Hakusan Dori (the closest main street on which Suidobashi and Jinbocho stations are located). Communicating with the staff in these particular restaurants may be a bit of a challenge for non-Japanese speakers, but several of the restaurants have an ordering system that makes it less of an issue. Ordering is done by putting cash inside a machine near the door and pressing a button with a picture of the item you want. The machine then prints a ticket you hand to the cook. When ready, they will bring the food to your table. Some of the restaurants have only the Japanese name of the dish on the buttons. However, they also display samples of each dish in an exterior window. I did not find it too difficult to find what I wanted outside and memorize the price and picture so I would know which button to press on the machine.

Koishikawa Korakuen Garden and the Imperial Palace East Gardens were within walking distance (15 minutes and 30 minutes, respectively) and are very nice attractions. Ueno Park was a little further, but I walked there in about 40 minutes. I took the Metro, JR trains, or Toei subway to get to the Edo-Tokyo Museum, Meiji Jingu, Shibuya Crossing, Odaiba Island, and Senso-ji temple and it took no more than 40 minutes to get to any of them from Hotel Niwa.

Although I was not there during baseball season, Hotel Niwa would also be in a great location if you are interested in seeing a Yomiuri Giants game. The Tokyo Dome is less than a 10 minute walk from the hotel.

Very nice hotel. Clean, modern and spacious rooms with everything you are likely to need. The room window can open slightly so you don't have to rely on aircon and can get fresh air in the room. The hotel is really close to Suidobashi station, which is great. There are convenience stores and restaurants very close by too. If you have a JR pass, you can make use of JR Chuo line that gets you to quite a few cool places in Tokyo for free. You can use the JR lines from Tokyo station with your JR pass and it really is dead easy. Change at Ochanomizu from one JR line (Orange) to the only other JR line (yellow) (usually the two trains stop opposite each other right on the same platform) Rooms are spacious enough to open your suitcase and be able to walk around it (sheer luxury for Japan). There is also a coin-laundry on the third floor that you can use; and you will need to if you are, like us, surprised by the number of people still smoking in Japan. After a nice night in one of many Tokyo's izakayas your clothes will smell like the ever popular Bonito shavings. :) For your convenience, there are the always ubiquitous vending machines on the third floor too.

The only downside is that the free wifi fits the old "you get what you pay for" adage. It is almost useless late in the evening. If you like to do your research and re-cap of things you have seen in the evening, that'll be a problem. It is simply a capacity issue and the disappointing thing is that the hotel is aware of it, and only happy to offer an empty apology. Therefore, that takes the score down one point. If, however, you're not bothered about the 'net access... Then you will not be disappointed.

We enjoyed our 5 night stay at NIWA. The room was very clean and well aired, had AC, looked nice, comfortable bed and enough space, storage (as with all Japanese hotels, rooms are small but ours had more than enough space for our luggage, cloths etc.).
Staff friendly and helpful.
Location was handy for very nearby subway station (approx 5 minutes walk), some restaurants and shops nearby but not the area to go out sightseeing but as subway is so close, cheap and easy to use you can get to all major tourist areas quickly.
The imperial palace was only 20 minutes walk away and we walked from Tokyo main station to hotel in about 45 minutes.
Was good value and would stay there again.

Have just spent four nights at the Niwa Hotel. It was our first visit to Japan and we picked it
mainly on the reviews. We were not disappointed. It is a wonderful mix of Japanese and
Western decor. The staff are extremely helpful and speak excellent english. The hotel is just off the main road and very quiet but within a 3 or 4 minute walk to the nearest station. Our room was small but totally adequate and was spotlessly clean, the loo is amazing!!
Should we return to Tokyo we would certainly stay again.

This was the first hotel we stayed in on our visit to Japan in SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2011 (have only just set up Trip Advisor account).

Coming from Australia we were a bit shocked at the smallness of the rooms. However, this turned out to be a great little hotel. Very clean, modern and practical.

Only a short walk to Ochanomisu and Suidobashi train stations, we used Hotel Niwa as our base for looking around Tokyo and it was great.

This hotel caters to business travelers, thus the small yet practical size.

Staff spoke excellent English and were very helpful. Would stay here again.

It takes only 12 minutes from the nearest station Suidobashi to Shinjyuku(where is the center of Tokyo) by Japan Rail.

Awesome, awesome, awesome is the only way to describe our stay at the Hotel Niwa.

Price: Great value for Tokyo, this hotel has figured out the hotel formula!

Rooms: The bathrooms are well designed with quality materials and boast a TOTO automated toilet. The room itself has a very minimalistic and comfortable Japanese influenced western layout. Simple touches including chilled water bottles in the refrigerator, delicious green tea with a Japanese tea set, and ambient lighting really enhanced the experience.

Services: There is an amenity suite that offers massage chairs, laundry machines, vending options and a secluded roof patio.

Concierge/Front Desk: Very helpful, especially if you need something translated from Japanese into English.

Inside Tip:
(1) Spend some time learning how the metro and JR system work for internal city transit. Turns out we used the JR system nearly the entire trip (Suidobashi is the closest JR station to the hotel) with the metro occasionally.

(2) The hyper-local neighborhood does not offer much in terms of late night dining/nightlife. If this is going to be a significant portion of your trip, consider the cost of cabs ($$$$) since the mass transit system does not run 24 hours/day.

Stayed two nights at this hotel. The hotel was two years old but looks brand new. Great location,
all the convenience stores closeby. A good restaurant downstairs and next door. The room is small but adequate. The water from sink was drinkable. Comfortable bed and all things works without any flaws. If you visit Tokyo, this hotel is the BEST choice.
