“An island in the sky over the hustle of Tokyo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2012

The Shangrila Tokyo is perched on top of a skyscraper tower right next to Tokyo Station and The Imperial Palace in the center of the city. Arrival is a bit disorienting as you enter below ground level and the lobby is on the 28th floor. The hotel occupies several floors above the 28th, and the result is the room views give everyone a specatcular landscape right at your feet. The lobby bar benefits from this view, as does the well appointed fitness center, complete with a pool on the 29th floor.

If you are looking for open courtyards and wide open spaces this isn't your place, but then again Tokyo probably isn't your type of city either. If you want a smart room with all the bells and whistles, attentive service and good food, all with a world class metro view, then come on in.

The concierge is very helpful to meet all needs, which is often key in a city like Tokyo which can be challenging for foreigners. The location is central to everything, and easy walks to the Palace, Ginza, Tsujuki Fish Market. Rooms are spacious and well designed. This is a top flight hotel in a world class city and location.

This property is one of the nicest I have ever stayed in. Impeccable service, great location, and facilities that are beautiful. The rooms are good sized with technology that will spoil you. Very modern and feels like the whole property is brand new. If you can get a deal, stay on the club floor and enjoy the breakfast to die for, snacks throughout the day, and drinks overlooking the Tokyo skyline at night.
Having the Tokyo station next door was very nice for us. My wife and I were a little intimidated as this was our first trip to Japan, but after one day we had it figured out and could hop on a train and go wherever we wanted. Check out the different parts of Tokyo. They have great shopping and the little, off the beaten path restaurants are the best to enjoy the local experience.
We enjoyed every thing about this hotel and would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: You pick a room overlooking the Tokyo station and Imperial Palace, or the other side has a nice view...

The Shangri-la chain has developed a reputation of being non-descript 5* luxury, hence I was hesitant of booking the Shangri-la. With so many top end hotels to choose from in Tokyo I initially did not have the Shangri-la as my first choice but between being offered and excellent rate and wanting to be next to Tokyo station I booked the Shangri-la.

I am very pleased to say that the Tokyo Shangri-la totally beat me expectation and has made me look at the chain in a new light. From first impressions all the way through to the end of our stay we were made to feel at home and the hotel went out of its way to make us feel at home. After a 12 hour flight in to Narita and the train in to Tokyo station we were greeted by the bell staff on the train platform (a great friendly service) and escorted to the hotel. This complimentary service is invaluable after such a long flight also Tokyo station is a maze with multiple exits.

My only small complaint is the Shangri-la lacked a buzz, it’s not a big hotel and being based in an office block made the atmosphere a little sterile. Its neither small enough to be a boutique hotel nor big enough to be a big hotel and hence lacks atmosphere.

Pros:
Hotel design
Room size
Great service
Meet and greet at Tokyo station
Furnishing quality

Average:
Breakfast quality
Medium size hotel that lacks the buzz.
Location is good if you want to be near Ginza, business district or Tokyo station. However far away from nightlife.

Spent a magical five nights here alone on business. I love my family but WOW was it fun to relax here alone -- I felt like I was in a sanctuary.

Warning: if you want to see Tokyo's sights, probably a better thing not to stay here. Because you will not want to leave the tranquility and sheer and total perfection of service that permeates everything from design to housekeeping to advance technology in the rooms to the amazing food to the spa (the best treatments I've ever received and in the most luxurious spa rooms).

The hotel is on top of a skyscraper -- don't let this put you off. It is many floors of lobbies and spa and restaurants with the rooms above this. All rooms have a tremendous view a la Lost in Translation (which was filmed at the Hyatt -- but same type of view).

Here are some suggestions if you are going to stay here:

1. Insist on a room with a view of the Royal Imperial Palace where the Japanese royalty live. If you are lucky, and the clouds disperse, you will see Mount Fuji as well. You will also see the main train tracks in the foreground -- fantastic full view of Tokyo.

2. Book a full spa treatment. The staff will sit you down and go over your needs and give you a type of test to know how to best work on and with you. I was dubious but it ended up being the most amazing treatment I've had at any resort -- or otherwise. They start with washing your feet and move on to massage, facials, etc. There is a shower in your massage room and it is beyond luxurious

3. Enjoy the heated toilets, the lit dimmers and the window shades in the room. Sounds strange but it will totally effect how comfortable you can feel. Every single switch in every single room, no matter complex, worked perfectly. Only the Japanese!

4. Make sure you get club access. They serve a happy hour spread that is divine -- all the top-shelf alcohol and Champagne you could dream of plus delicious food both hot and cold. You barely need dinner after this.

CONS

None. Seriously, I have never said that before. This place is perfect. Perfect location, perfect service, perfect food.

Enjoy!

Room Tip: Request view of the Palace and Mt Fuji! AWESOME!!!!

Almost all good hotels in Tokyo have great service by western standards so it goes without saying that this hotel does as well. I stayed here for a week and found it extremely convenient being a short walk to several subway lines as well as the Tokyo JR station. Prices are not cheap but in the context of high end Tokyo pretty reasonable. One downside, the two restaurants in the hotel are not great and for some reason very very slow service (based on two meals so they have just had a bad couple of days).

What an excellent experience in every aspect in this magnificent hotel. Customer service is amazing. The porters (two young women) insisted in taking my suitcase to the train station 1 block away despite my pleas to let me do it alone. The room was fantastic. The bed was divine. The shower was incredible. Every forgotten amenity was supplied for in the room. The breakfast was a feast. The pool on the upper room was so nice-quiet and peaceful. This was one of the best places in which I ever stayed!

Room Tip: Pick an upper room for a great view.

High atop the Marunouchi Trust Tower, this top had a few floors in the building. The entrance was a bit difficult to get to, but the location was great - right next to the main Tokyo train station, and within walking distance of multiple department stores, train lines, shops, restaurants and gardens of the Imperial Palace. In fact, if you like to walk, you could walk to Ginza (the main shopping district) and if you felt more adventurous, probably an hour's walk to Akihabara (electronics district) and Asukasa Shrine (touristy ethnic place for shopping / sight-seeing) and the new Tokyo TV tower.

The luxurious fittings and fixtures, the customer service, and the food was great. Ofcourse, all this was at a price that was incredibly expensive. But the room was stunning and big, and the bathroom had a really sophisticated automatic toilet. Everybody spoke and understood English and was helpful. There was free WiFi in the room as well, though breakfast wasn't part of our package.

Only downside was that they did not have my room ready, even by 3pm, and then I had to wait for around 15 minutes and remind them. Other than that, it was quite flawless.
