“Really pleasant wee spot”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

We have stayed here twice; both times at the end of a Catalonian road trip, as we have found it a lot easier staying close to Barcelona to save a long drive to the airport on our last day (takes about an hour and avoids the most difficult city traffic), but not actually in the city itself; you want an easy drive on your last day and no trouble parking. On both occasions, we found the staff charming, helpful and welcoming; there is a good selection of childrens toys and books to keep a toddler entertained; it does not make any pretentions about being a five star hotel, but it is clean, some of the views from the rooms are stunning; ours having a full vista of the mountains; and it is of course it is an excellent base in which to explore the surrounding area. Breakfast is pleasant, and continental style. Decor in the rooms is comfortable and airconditioning effective. We would stay here again.

...frogs and all. Especially the frogs. They were outside making a huge noise as we went to bed and I couldn't work out what it was and had to ask in the morning!
Clean rooms, pleasant staff (with far more English than I have Catalan or Spanish), good food (both in the evening and breakfast). Only stayed one night when we visited Montserrat, but would happily return.

I would have rated this hotel with four stars, but the incident which may have resulted in being killed by the fall of a heavy plaster piece of ceiling next to my head while I was sleeping gave me second thoughts about the rating.
This hotel is otherwise well located relative to Montserrat, the staff speaks English and is helpful and friendly, the food in the restaurant is quite good, breakfast is adequate and there is A/C in the rooms and overall it is quite clean.
The hotel was clearly recently renovated and up to modern safety standards. It was therefore surprising that pieces of the ceiling of room #1 were not securely affixed. It was also odd to see light in the attic trough the hole left by the falling piece. The other problem was that I bruised my head on the ceiling while going down the stairs from the second floor, due to lack of headspace, and I'm not a tall person.
I should say that when I reported the incident to the staff, it immediately offered the previous evening's dinner for free.

Room Tip: Be sure to check whether the ceiling pieces of the rooms on the top floor have been secured, especia...

This is not a luxury hotel, but it is comfortable and clean. The breakfast was OK.
Monistrol is a good starting-point for exploring the remarkable mountains and the famous monastery.
Our plane was delayed, and we arrived in Monistrol as late as 3.30 in the night. Still we were warmly received by the very helpful staff.

Small functional hostale in the interesting little town of Monstrol at

the base of Montserrat. Nothing special but convenient base to explore the mountain. Restaurant simple but with some interesting food. I hade rabbit in a beer sauce with prawns; quite nice but, as usual in Spain, no veg.

Reversible air con in the room did it's job of taking the chill off.

Bathroom a little shabby.

Other than that, fine.

We did not have high expectation from our least expensive hotel in Spain, but were pleasantly surprised. We had a comfortable room without frills. It did have wifi, flatscreen TV (excellent reception), hair dryer, and a gorgeous view. It is within walking distance from the rack railroad up to Montserrat. We ate a delicious dinner at the hotel. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

As my friend Mike Barter would say, "give it a try. give 'em all a try. you decide". But seriously, folks, here's the lowdown on this "hostal". We'll start with the bad stuff. Firstly, despite the name, it's not a hostel (although someone told me hostal means hotel in Spanish, but with our experience so far, I'm going to go for the definition used in the movie "Hostel" (2005)). It does, however, share some exciting similarities with a hostel: the rooms are tiny, the beds, tiny, the bathroom, even tinier, and the furnishing, miserable. The thickness of the walls is similarly tiny (ie. thin), though at least they have some? Curtains would have done just as well. There are, strangely enough, large printed pictures of mountain scenes (the same mountains that are just outside your window, funnily enough) on the wall. The prices are large, which doesn't really fit with the tiny theme we have going here, but the meals don't disappoint. Whatever you do, don't order the "round steak" - it is neither round nor a steak. The bar down in the village square is a third of the price and maybe even double the thickness. Service was friendly but preoccupied; the universal ennuie of service jobs does not sit well with the Spanish. Don't plan on arriving before 9am (or checking out - or eating). The general is of a place that either has lost its owner in a bog, or has simply stopped caring - the eternal draw of the monastery above probably keeps the coffers full, so the need for linen and towels without holes is ignored.

On the positive side, Montserrat is awesome. If you can stay somewhere this close for less, or even slightly more, do so. Lastly, if I were a slug, I would definitely choose to live a box of strawberries. If I had a choice, of course - some slugs are just born into it.
