“Beautiful setting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2006

My boyfriend and I stayed here one night on our visit to Colca Canyon. The setting is unbelievable. The lodge is situated right in the mountainside of the canyon with a river view and wonderful 'banos thermadores' (private hot springs). The staff was very helpful, especially given the fact that my boyfriend was very ill. The location is really what this place is about. The rooms are large, simple and clean. The common area has a nice bar and sitting area (although it was rather smokey) and a nice large dining room with a fire pit in the center. Would have enjoyed staying here another night to explore a little bit more. Very nice hotel, definitely on the higher end of all of the places we stayed during our 2 week visit to Peru.

The Colca Lodge has a stunning setting along the river at the bottom of a canyon. Everyone has a large rustic cabin with 2 beds on the 1st floor and 2 beds on a loft style 2nd floor. This hotel is not for the technophile. The rooms do not have a phone or TV, but I did not miss them. The hot springs are a short walk down a well marked and well-lit path and were one of the high point of my trip to Peru. There were 3 different temperatures for the hot springs (one cold and 2 hot) and were never too crowded. There were many hiking trails on the property, but our visit was too short to have time to enjoy them. Although the food was a little higher priced than comparable places in Arequipa, the quality was excellent and the price was still less than comparable places in Lima or Cuzco. The breakfast buffet was bountiful and well stocked. People should be aware that there are no other restaurants within easy driving distance so would plan on having dinner at the lodge every night. I would highly recommend staying at this lodge (if you can give up your phone and having internet access). I would also highly recommend visting the Colca canyon to anyone staying in Arequipa.

We loved the Colca Lodge. We booked it as part of a 2 day, 1 night package with Carlos Zarate Aventuras in Arequipa. The hotel is gorgeous. We loved our log-cabin style room. It had two floors with 2 beds on each floor. It was really warm and comfortable on what was a very cold night! The view from our balcony was stunning - overlooking the river (as all rooms do) and the stars that night were amazing. The hot springs were great, and the bar is lovely too - complete with board games. The dining room is also great - we got a table beside the fireplace which was fab, and the food was good (buffet). It's popular with tour groups - there were two large groups when we were there but neither was at all loud in any way. I would highly recommend this hotel.

We stayed here one night on our way between Arequipa and the Condor lookout. It was clean, fun, and very charismatic. The service at the front desk was terrible. They spoke no English and never even looked or smiled at us when we spoke to them.

The bar and lounge area was very smoky. The nightly slideshow was hardly worth it- it was dull and boring. Most of the time I could barely hear it due to the noise in the bar.

The rooms were excellent, but be warned that it is not equiped with city luxuries. There is no television, phone, and hot water can be scarce. The third and fourth beds are also precariously located in a loft only accessible by a ladder.

By far the best part was the restaurant. The service was what you would expect at a top hotel. They were friendly and attentive. The buffet was limited, but of excellent quality. I would definitely recommend this hotel- it was a pleasant surprise in the Colca Canyon!

  • Liked — Service
  • Disliked — Distance from the main road
  • Tips/Secrets — Walk to the nearby ruins- they are fantastic!

It is a beautiful place, the food is good, the staff are helpful, but it is very cold in the rooms and the small heaters they bring do not warm up the rooms. Then it takes almost forever to get warm water in the showers of the rooms. Then there is the very long cold walk to the "hot springs' to get warm. No one in the lodge as a guest would try that one. We were really glad when we could get out and on the road. We were there on April 23, 2006. We were told by other travelers who stayed in Chivay Town instead that they were very comfortable. This place is very overrated.

The Colca Canyon Lodge is an eco lodge in the Colca Canyon, a 5 hour ride along mostly dirt roads from Arequipa. Tours usually take people there one day; the second day they take you an additional 1 1/2 hours to the Cruz del Condor to see the condors (yes, quite wonderful), then all the way back to Arequipa. We stayed three nights in mid-May at the Colca lodge - lovely rooms, good food - and best of all their own thermal pools in which you can hang out at night and watch the stars come out. I would really recommend if you can spend some extra days there visiting some of the local villages or just sitting on your front porch and watching the river flow - it's very worthwhile.
