My wife booked a table for us to have dinner in the Orangery restaurant, to celebrate my birthday.
This restaurant is part of the Balbirnie House Hotel complex set in lovely wooded parkland close to Markinch, Fife.
The staff are very customer orientated and the evening went very smoothly from arrival, drinks with Canapés, thru to a superb dinner consisting of four nouvelle cuisine courses and finishing off with coffee in the lounge.
I had previously not had food like it before and we passed items to and fro sharing the tastes.
There was a steady stream of diners throughout the evening, whilst the hotel was simultaneously hosting a large wedding party. Speed of service and quality was unaffected, staff were well versed on their individual duties and certainly made us feel welcome.
I'm sure we'll be back and may try out more adventurous fair on the menu. When you dine here, don't worry about the expense...The experience is worth every penny!.

Hello Bravehearted,
Many thanks for your kindness, and the denoting of a 5 Star review.
We are absolutely delighted to hear that you enjoyed your visit to The Orangery at Balbirnie House so much. It was very kind of you to take the time to write, much appreciated.

'Worth every penny' - thank you. Aye, the customers pay the wages!

I would say however, that we are not 'nouvelle cuisine', as many readers will have a perception of that of being small portions. We're about a wonderful and most comprehensive meal, spread over a span of canapés, fresh baked bread, 4 courses with wonderful portions, coffee and tablet.

We booked for 10 of us to have a 4-course meal in the Orangerie for my wife's 40th. We've been 2 or 3 times before (in different restaurant areas/private rooms) and never been disappointed. This visit was no exception. At just £36 per head for the meal it's great value for money, though the drinks can push the bill up considerably.

Upon arrival you get escorted to the longe for drinks - with olives and nuts supplied to nibble on whilst waiting to be escorted to your table. The rooms are full of character, high ceilings and cozy fireplaces, with beautiful views over the grounds.

The meal itself was good as ever with decent choice form the set menu (which has been different each time we've visited). Most of the service staff are of foreign nationality - mostly polish - but all were very courteous, helpful and knew what was available if a question was asked (were also happy to take a few group photos for us).

We'd taken our own birthday cake which they brought through with candles lit, before taking it away to cut for us. All of which was a nice touch. To cap it off the manager offered us a complimentary night cap after the meal in another lounge area - with a full choice of spirits, champagne etc so a very generous and appreciated touch.

It is one of those places that is perfect to treat yourself on special occasions and ideal for groups. It is well known for hosting weddings but it's well worth a visit for a special meal when the occasion merits it.

Great food, with an excellent wine list and well chosen Scottish cheeses.

This is not the first time we have eaten at the Orangery, and it will not be the last. It offers a great selection of fish and meat dishes. Served in a spacious, but (because of the spaces between the tables) private dining experience.

The service is always attentive and discrete.

For me, two minor things would make it perfect; better bread and machine made decaffeinated coffee! However - I can live with that - the great food and wine makes up for these very minor points.

Lovely restaurant that shows off the best of Scottish food. Great menu choice. The whole experience is great. Drink and canopies to start followed by course after course of deliciousness. We have also been lucky in the past to get the chefs table. Great present for a foodie!

I love to come here. We spent a wonderful valentines night when hubby proposed and were married a year a day later. The staff at both occasions were faultless and made everything perfect
Now. 10 years on we sadly couldn't stay as they were full. But wanted our 10 year anniversary meal here
The one thing that let them down, hubby had told them the reason we were dining there previously so I expected to be welcomed in that way. Unfortunately the event hadn't been passed to the restaurant staff. But apart from that. It was wonderful
Shown to library to relax over a drink and peruse the menu. Taken through and seated and looked after very well.
The food was great and I couldn't decide on a desert so had the sharing platter - with lots of little sweet bites and pots to indulge in.
After dinner we had coffee in the library and were offered a complimentary drink then to celebrate
