“crème de la crème”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2010

visited Balbirnie for my birthday and loved every moment of it. I recieved a very friendly welcoming from the reception team and even by the lovely housekeeping team on arrival!
Nothing was too much hassle and they really went out of their way to make me and my friend feel welcome. The rooms were spotless and i loved the way the hotel portrays the country house theme throughout! The hotel is beautiful and i was speechless when we drove up the drive and caught our first glimpse of the grand georgian building! The rate for the hotel is very fair and personally i would pay more. The dinning experience was most enjoyable, we were shown through to the library bar where we sat on a lovely comfortable sofa and enjoyed a delicious glass of House champagne. The orangery ( the main restaurant) was beautiful and the staff were very attentive, constantly topping up my glass with iced water! The food was cooked to perfection, especially my fillet steak. The chef even presented my dessert on a plate decorated with happy birthday in chocolate writing!! I really cannot fault Balbirnie House Hotel in anyway and cant wait to return! I do have one regret and that is I did not have time to enjoy a relaxing massage in the therapy room. Thanks Balbirnie for a WONDERFUL stay.

Beware rooms at the back of the hotel. Tradesmen deliveries start at 05.00 and the noise will wake you up. avoid room 107.
The room charges, particulary for small families were considered excessive £145 for a small double and £185 + £40 for a family room £40 for two extra childs beds made up on a sofa bed that was part of the room furniture.
When we complained about the noise and the excess £40 charge we got nowhere.
This hotel is for sale, staff were less than enthusiastic to satisfy.
Local rumour is that it is being run by administrators

We're very sorry that you were woken early, and are rather mystified as to those circumstances, as our deliveries usually start much later than the time mentioned. As regards pricing, our rates are well within the parameters of industry ratings, and actually well beneath many comparable competitors, and we consider all rates as offering great value. With regard to your comment re 'administration', I can happily confirm that is NOT the case, and in every shape in format it is business exactly as usual.

For the money this hotel charges it has a really long way to go in order to offer value for money. Indeed the setting is stunning and the grounds are really nice especially if you want a nice romantic walk in the woods with your loved one but they just let it all down with a few areas that could be improved.

The rooms are enormous and lovely but the bed we had (room 203) was two large singles pushed together which sunk in the middle. It was really uncomfortable to sleep on and not what you would expect when you are paying so much. The breakfast was just ok there was a small selection of fruit but not much and the cooked breakfast one day way was brought to us freshly prepared and the second day it was all out in trays swimming in fat so not sure what was going on there. We did find the staff hit and miss with the reception team being extremely good (they were locals) but the waiting staff at both breakfast and in the Orangery not that good (they weren't locals). We did have to wait 25 minutes for some drinks at the rather sorry looking bar as the waiter figured out how to make a cosmopolitan for my wife which annoyed me a little and call me what you like but when you are paying so much money for a drink the glasses your drink is served in should not be a old looking tumbler. We also found this with the wine glasses in the Orangery a selection of wine ranging to the £££ but one type of sorry looking wine glass to serve them in. Don't get me wrong it all goes down the same way but if you are spending alot of money on a bottle of claret then it should be served it in the right type of wine glass in my opinion.

We may go back here is it was on a special deal but we would never pay the £170 a night they charge again as it is way over priced for the service provided.

The house is stunning otherwise and extremely quite when we went there.

We have been coming here for a few years now for the odd night away from home. We are both 30 years old. We got married here on 8th July 2010 and it was a phenomenal day and night. This hotel has bags of character. Beautiful both inside and out and also has lovely gardens. We were lucky as it was very sunny but we knew the hotel had plenty of excellent photo spots inside. Staff were very friendly, polite and professional. Both the Bistro and Orangery serve excellent food. Breakfast buffet very nice also. Rooms are spacious and well decorated. The Ballroom looks magnificent when set up for a wedding. Our guests were blown away by this venue and several will come back to stay for a treat. Basically this place is top drawer - recently voted Wedding Venue of the Year and Hoteliers of the year and we couldn't agree more with this. Stunning. Thanks you. Karen and Jonathan Henson

We had a great short stay at Balbirnie House. Without even requesting it, we were upgraded to a very large and well maintained room. Dinner at the casual Bistro was exactly what we were looking for with our 5 year old child. The grounds are very pleasant. Would stay here again if in the area.

My wife and I held our wedding reception at Balbirnie House Hotel and it was perfect. The grounds of the hotel are lovely and the hotel itself is great. It is perfectly equipped for a wedding as there are so many different rooms and the ballroom is great especially with its new fancy dancefloor. The service of all the staff was as good as we could have hoped for and we were made to feel so welcome. We also booked out the bistro the night before the wedding which serves great food in a nice informal location. I also had the chance to have a look at some of the hotel rooms which were all very nice, especially the deluxe rooms which were huge and very well equipped. All in all i couldn't recommend Balbirnie House hotel highly enough as its brilliant for weddings and also lovely for romantic getaway in the heart of scotland. We looked at lots of hotels through Scotland (mainly Aberdeen) and this certainly stood out and it was nice to know that we weren't sharing the hotel with other wedding parties which is so often the case with 4/5* star hotels these days. If you have any questions then please feel free to e-mail me.

Stayed here recently for 1 night. Lovely hotel in a beautiful setting. Room was very spacious and very nicely decorated. Nice library bar. Food in the Orangery was delicious. Only small downside was the cooked breakfast was buffet style. I prefer mine cooked fresh. Apart from that I can't really fault anything else.
