“Beautiful Balbirnie”
Reviewed June 4, 2008

My partner and I stayed at the Balbirnie House Hotel for two nights in early June and we also hosted a family dinner for 20 in the hotel’s private dining room.
Our deluxe Room (No. 307) was large and on the top (3rd) floor; no lift available so the porter was obliged to carry our luggage all the way!
The room was large and clean and had everything required of a decent 4 star hotel; no minibar but 24 hour room service and complimentary bottles of water. Large thick lined drapes kept the early morning light out!
No marble wall paneling in the bathroom, but the towels were large and well warmed on a heated towel rail. And the sink had mixer taps – sometimes a novelty in Scotland!!

Huge bed, but would prefer modern duvets to the sheets and blanket routine!

The staff were very good, especially the front office and restaurant staff, who did everything possible to ensure that our dinner for 20 went off with out a hitch, as it did! The food, previously chosen from a selection of menus, was well presented, contained fresh vegetables (not boiled to death!) and every course was delicious. Service was impressive and not intrusive; wine glasses were refilled without asking.

Breakfast was great for those (like me!) who appreciate a hearty Scottish breakfast; it included lorne sausage, though it was a bit dry and tough at times! For those who wanted a lighter breakfast (like my partner) choice was limited but still adequate. Breakfast was included in the room rate.
The only disadvantage about breakfast is that the hotel attracts large parties for weddings and other events, and the noise of a table of 10 or 12 guests reliving the previous night can be very wearing; why not set aside a separate room for such guests so that those of us who want breakfast in a quiet atmosphere can nurse our hangovers in peace, and not have to listen to loud conversations amidst hoots of laughter.

The bar had a very good selection of malt whiskies, as one would expect (this is not dry martini land!) and the bar staff were both accomplished and pleasant.

We will definitely stay at the Balbirnie House Hotel again; it is by far the best hotel in the area that we have stayed in!

I stayed here overnight for business. Although pricey I had an amazing room and the staff were wonderful. We were greeted with warmth and terrific service. Unfortunately the main restaurant was closed, so we ate in the bistro, which didn't have a great deal of choice but the food was very good. I'd thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone and would love to go back and stay a bit longer!

Styed here overnight whilst at a conference. Staff very helpful & efficient. Room was spacious with all I could want (including access to internet via TV). Hotel ought to get duvets tho' - didn't sleep so great with sheets & blankets.

Was very disappointed by food tho' despite it having won awards. If you like cooked breakfast then you'll be fine - however the continental breakfast was very mediocre. Also they only had full fat milk (asked for skimmed or semi-skimmed & told they had none), no plain yogurt - basically no thought had been given to people who might be watching their weight or fat intake. Coffee was pretty disgusting too.

Fantastic wedding venue - my sister married here last week and we had a fantastic time - i admit that the rooms are pretty inconsistent in size but that is reflected in the price and some of the rooms are really quirky and add to the overall feel of the hotel - the food in the orangery is amazing and good value for money - you would pay twice this amount in london! the grounds are beautiful and it has a really calming feel and romance to it.

Although we did not stay overnight at the hotel as we live nearby, my husband and I enjoyed a lovely evening to celebrate my husband's 50th Birthday.

I would like to commend all staff for very professional, friendly and attentive service. The meal was excellent and when the staff discovered it was a special occasion the chef decorated my husband’s plate with congratulations.

Overall everything about the evening was perfect.

Our family and friends are slowly coming down to earth after a truly fantastic day on 20th October, 2007 (our daughter's wedding reception held at Balbirnie House). The whole thing was just superb from start to finish, due in no small measure to the attentiveness and professionalism of all the staff who were involved during the day (and right into the night!). The day was exceptionally well planned with great attention to detail and the wedding co-ordinators kept us fully informed and on schedule the whole way through, boosting our confidence, running the show impeccably and dealing with last minute requests or minor problems helpfully and efficiently. The Jazz band, - Le Jazz Hot were just great, hitting exactly the right mood and volume level for the afternoon drinks reception, - thanks to Balbirnie for suggesting them, and the meal was beautifully presented, served and, not least, delicious. Well done all the supervisors, waiters, your chefs and kitchen staff!

Loads of people told us it was easily the best wedding celebration they had ever attended, and having been at a good few others ourselves lately at top Scottish venues, I would say you're well in front of the field on all counts. Your policy of concentrating the company in the Ballroom itself really pays off, and "Eat the Peach" had the place jumping from the start. The rooms were also wonderful, - my only regret is not being able to spend a bit longer in them! Those of us able to face breakfast were treated to a tasty hangover cure that really hit the spot!

We will all have many happy memories of the day and our time at Balbirnie. Truly, "memories are made of this". Well done!

Best wishes for Balbirnie's continuing success in the future

Excellent wedding venue- the function suites are lovely.
Rooms not great- small, windows on the roof so no view of the lovely grounds which was pretty disappointing.
Food was really good including really nice breakfast.
Hotel should invest in duvets as it's pretty annoying having the blanket and sheet arrangement.
Bar closed at 1am prompt which for a residents bar at a wedding venue was odd- put an uprupt end to a great wedding.
