Due to unforseen circumtances we had to change the day of the booking. This was done without fuss or bother and in fact when we arrived we had been upgraded to a better room. Staff, food and room all excellent.

I and my family have been regular visitors to the Balbirnie's Orangery Restaurant for many years. The quality of the food and service have been excellent. However, last year I booked Sunday lunch in the Orangery for a family birthday, only to have the hotel call me a few days before the due date to cancel my booking due to "needing the venue for a wedding". This has just happened again, and for the same reason, although this time the hotel offered the alternative of their bistro, which is more of a burger and pasta kind of venue and not therefore suitable for the sort of occasion we had in mind. Perhaps the offer of an alternative date with a gratis bottle of wine might have been good customer relations, but this was not offered on either of these occasions. In fact, having exchanged a few emails with the owner of the hotel, the tone of which became rather unpleasant and completely unapologetic, it turns out that the hotel's policy is to cancel lunches booked at the Orangery if there is overspill from weddings taking place at the hotel, and they do host a large number of weddings. Book lunch by all means, and good luck to you, but you might want to have an alternative venue lined up in case another wedding happens to crop up. I for one shall not be back.

Hello Davy, many thanks for your kind comments, and on behalf of all at Balbirnie, our gratitude for denoting a 5 Star review.

Many thanks for highlighting about the new awards, now pride of place in our front hall, as you have seen. What a night we had at the annual hotel awards on Sunday night. On behalf of the entire brigade, I very humbly convey:

- 2013 Wedding Hotel of the Year – simply incredible, as that is now 7 years out of 9.

- 2013 Gold Laurel Trophy for Passion and Performance Par Excellence.

- 2013 Business Excellence Social Media Laurel, 'for Switched on Businesses in Hospitality, in recognition of a year of Excellence'.

To put things in context with the Wedding Hotel of the Year award. The Scottish Wedding Directory now lists some 335 wedding venues. The awards this year, following the initial public and client nominations, were subjected to the scrutiny of 38 judges. And then the physical visits commenced. 9 regional winners then selected, and the result announced in Glasgow, at a glittering awards dinner attended by some 550 of Scotland's top hoteliers.

So, there we are - history made again, and a wonderful credit to every single member of the brigade at Balbirnie. I guess we must be doing something right. So, in that context where do we go from here, how do we stay ahead of the curve? Well, as always we shall continue to do our best. As I have been suggesting to everyone at Balbirnie for these last 21 years: 'Today is not a dress rehearsal for tomorrow'. (!!!!!!)

Onwards we go then, the house is currently looking internally at its best in history, and the grounds this spring and summer are presented to a level - for wedding photography in particular - which is just fabulous.

For all daily updates and photographs, please do head on over and join our Facebook page. (Also now on Twitter personally, talking daily about what goes into our operations, just click Follow.)

Davy, It was very kind of you to take the time to write, much appreciated. As a wee celebration for denoting the first mention of the new awards, just let me know when you are next visiting. A bottle of Champagne awaits on the house.

just back from a 1 night DBB break. we have been many times and was married there 10 years years. we strongly disagree with one of the reviewer from the restaurant page who said that the staff were 'stuffy'. our experiences are always positive. the staff, both the experienced and the new training ones are always helpful and friendly without being intrusive.
dinner at the orangery was delicious. the food is not too fancy or overworked but fresh and well cooked. a slight gripe is that i would have liked an option of sirloin steak from the grill menu but i am aware that that is a very personal preference.
the room was a standard double and was fine, comfortable bed, clean, good sized dressing table and large mirror. although, if you can afford to push the boat out, the four poster bedroom is definitely worth it.
looking forward to our next stay.

Many thanks for denoting a 5 Star review, that is a lovely compliment from a Senior Reviewer.

Just let us know when you are next visiting, we can easily arrange an Aberdeen Angus sirloin. At the moment we are only featuring Fillet, Ribeye and Flat Iron, the latter of which is certainly getting my vote these days. (Melted butter with garlic, lemon and chopped parsley - delicious.)

We returned here after a number of years, having been back for meals in the interim. A a couple of years ago, standards seem to have slipped but now it is back to the high standard it had when we first stayed.
The welcome was good and the staff were very helpful. It feels as if you are staying in someone's home. The food was very good and the staff there were first class. We particularly liked been given water as we sat down. Not bottled but good tap water. I wish more hotels and restaurants would do the same.
The room was spacious and although this as a Groupon deal, we are unaware that the hotel did anything that was not normal. Well done to all at the hotel. I clicked about a swimming pool by mistake. There isn't one!

Hello Kingsknowe, many thanks for your complimentary comments and 5 Star review, much appreciated. Delighted to hear you have enjoyed our current offering so much, I have to agree with you. As a hotelier I am truly as happy with our offering today, as I ever have been. Our brigade is also especially strong at the moment, great managers, and many young staff who are shining stars in our industry.

On that note, we have also just announced today that we will have capability to take 24 individuals per year on 2 month Work Experience placements - Government scheme, all info from our Facebook page.

Usually out of budget I got a cracking deal to stay here on a B&B basis when my usual hotel was fully booked. If I could have that rate every time I'd be here easily 70 nights a year.

Classy building in great grounds; highly efficient staff who had me off to my room within 30 seconds of arriving (I also noticed they had a note to say they planned to take my credit card details but they did not ask bearing in mind I arrived at 11pm).

Nice comfortable room, great bed, noise free environment. Breakfast very good next day. Free wifi with no access codes needed. In fact it almost made working from home a pleasure. Well done.

Being picky the TV could be bigger and more modern!

Have also previously eaten in the Bistro which provides good value decent quality food.

Well now Sleep007, plainly you are an individual who knows what they are talking about, as a Senior Contributor with 225 reviews!!! Many thanks for denoting Balbirnie as a 5 Star review. That is really very much appreciated. Thank you for your honesty!

'18th Century Grandeur' you say. Well that is just lovely. Balbirnie is 1777 Grade A Listed, architecturally as being of National and International importance!

One of our favourite ever guest comments: 'Like a Merchant Ivory Film set'. Jane Eyre would have loved that one!

Even more sexy? Get this one. The 1845 Statistical Account for Scotland refers to Balbirnie House as being (as a building) - you'll like this - 'surpassed by few North of the Tweed'.

So there we go, and long may it continue, as each of us here are merely custodians of this lovely old house.

Thanks for noting re Free WiFi. All newly installed at a very significant investment, and especially being welcomed by our 65 or so local corporate clients, to whom we extend Special LPR's - Local Privilege Rates. Dear Readers, if relevant for your company please do let us know. You may be rather pleasantly surprised.

My husband and I revisited Balbirnie House after being married there some years ago, this was our first visit since being married so it was very special to return. We had lunch in the Bistro which is a new addition since our wedding and we were delighted with the choices available as well as the excellent quality of food we so fondly remember! The grounds were just as we remembered and we loved our day of reminiscing in the Long Gallery and the Ballroom. We now live in Canada hence the visit however we will be back next year to enjoy our sons wedding which he wisely chose to have at Balbirnie House. We can't say enough about the hotel, the staff are lovely - they are courteous and welcoming and no request ever seems to be a problem. The food is wonderful with lots of local produce being used and the "home-from-home" feeling is still there 12 years on.

Room Tip: Spend that little bit extra and go for a deluxe room.

Hello Snowbabies, well how lovely is this, absolutely joyful news. And please do convey my congratulations to the happy couple. What a story. Just wonderful, and our gratitude for denoting a 5 Star Review. From a Senior Contributor.

'Home from home' you say? When you got married at Balbirnie, one of our marketing lines used to be 'Once a home to few, now a home from home to many'. It was only recently that we amended that, on the advice of Lord Sugar, but it is lovely to see the recollection.
