I wanted to write this review following a recent sit down meal at the restaurant following a prolonged (several years) period of not using the Peking Restaurant, despite it being one of only a few sit down Chinese restaurants in our rural area, and so convenient to negate the need of driving some distance for an eat in Chinese meal.
We have lived in the area for over fifteen years now and used to use The Peking for takeaway meals. We stopped because the food was very greasy, and items such as Mongolian Lamb were closer to burnt rather than crispy - all this consistently regardless of when or what we ordered.
Following a conversation with friends recently we decided to give the restaurant another try due to their positive feedback. We booked a sit down meal with the same friends.
What a difference! The food is not perfect but very much better, and a lot of what we had was good. I hope this improvement continues. The said Mongolian lamb was good, and combined Chinese spices with lamb cooked just right. The spare ribs were delicious and meaty but not greasy, and the rice full of flavour and again, not greasy.
The decoration inside the restaurant leaves something to be desired, but, the lady owner and her colleague are extremely friendly and pleasant.
Taking the interior into account, times appear to have been tough, as is common for a lot of hostelries in rural England currently. A comprehensive and thought out advertising campaign and a investment in the interior would help, but, these are aesthetics which while important are not the main reason for visiting a restaurant; the food being centre stage. And, the centre stage event deserves at least a try...
So in all: A huge improvement and going in the right direction. Worth a try, and, if custom does increase, lets hope it is enough to enable a re-decoration of the interior, as the efforts so far by the team deserve this chance...
