Description: The Rose and Thistle a beautiful 16th Century thatched pub is nestled in the picture postcard village of Rockbourne on the outskirts of the New Forest. Outside is a lovely cottage garden to while away sunny days and watch the world go by. Inside is the perfect place to spend any time of year with the traditional interior of beamed ceilings, carved wooden benches and cosy log fires in the winter. Colin Beck our head chef works with local suppliers to create a traditional menu sourced locally and seasonally where possible. Our beef and pork come from the New Forest and our game is from the village, with Manor farm pheasant, pigeon and rabbit together with venison from the local game keeper. Fish is delivered directly from the south coast and vegetables are from local suppliers. The menu changes regularly but always includes favourites such as our famous home made steak and kidney pudding and slow cooked pork belly along side seasonal specials. We also offer a good range of bar snacks and lighter meals including Welsh Rarebit, Sausage and Mash as well as The Rose and Thistle sandwiches including rare roast beef, smoked salmon with watercress and the famous RAT burger with smoked bacon, emmental and hand cut chips! The Rose and Thistle, built around 1580, was originally 3 cottages and became a bakers which then later started to retail liquor. The first listed landlord was Richard Pope in the early 1890's whose photo can still be found on the gentleman's toilet door. The pub has had several colourful landlords over the years one of whom is rumoured to still haunt the building. In the 1970's the place was made famous for its seafood by Pete and Pam Reid and people flocked from all around to taste the lobster. A consortium of villagers then purchased the pub who later sold to Tim Norfolk all who maintained the places great reputation for food over the last 20 years. Tim retired in June 2008 when Kerry arrived, taking the pub from strength to strength. In late 2014 Chris took over the reins, with his friendly attitude and fantastic team you can always be guaranteed a warm welcome and delicious freshly prepared food.

Idyllic setting, relaxing, very friendly staff, very good real ale (a sign of good food to come).

Possibly the best steak and kidney pudding i have tasted, on the same level as the Goring in London.

Thank stephen d

Excellent location, excellent cuisine and outstanding service for dinner.
The two ladies serving were friendly, attentive but not intrusive but added to the traditional and warm ambiance of the inn.
Food preparation and presentation excellent. Good value and wine prices reasonable.
All round excellent.

Thank Geraldmm

We recently took a short break in Dorset and so decided to book Sunday lunch at the Rose & Thistle to break our journey on the way to the South coast. As a vegetarian I chose this pub as the menu looked good for me aswell as my meat eating husband! Our table was booked for 12pm and we were welcomed and seated immediately we arrived, the restaurant soon filled up - the atmosphere was warm and cosy with a lovely wood fire burning. Our starters arrived - warm black pudding salad for my husband, carrot and coriander soup for myself. Our mains were Confit pork belly with black pudding, red onion jam and ginger beer jus with crackling - amazingly good, and I chose the Homity pie with a potato, onion and cheese filling - comfort food at its best! We rounded off the meal with ice cream and a very good fruit crumble and custard. Heartily recommend you visit this pub if you are in the region - totally lived up to our expectations and set us on our way to a great short break.

My husband and I took his parents here for dinner on Saturday evening. The menu was absolutely superb, the food was the best that any of us had ever eaten, and the restaurant atmosphere was lovely, such a beautiful building. Unfortunately our experience was marred slightly by the waitress who would not desist from flirting outrageously with my husband. We laughed about it at the time but in retrospect it really was rude, unprofessional and quite overwhelming. Having said that it won't stop us returning for the fantastic food, but if it did happen again we would definitely have to say something.

Took the in laws for a belated Mother's Day treat. And what a treat! Sensational asparagus starter and we all raved about the superb quality of our main courses - duck, pork belly and steak and kidney. All prepared to the highest quality and easily the best "pub meal" I've ever had. Lovely old traditional pub too and not over-restored. Roaring fire, low beams and friendly service
