Description: The Rose and Thistle a beautiful 16th Century thatched pub is nestled in the picture postcard village of Rockbourne on the outskirts of the New Forest. Outside is a lovely cottage garden to while away sunny days and watch the world go by. Inside is the perfect place to spend any time of year with the traditional interior of beamed ceilings, carved wooden benches and cosy log fires in the winter. Colin Beck our head chef works with local suppliers to create a traditional menu sourced locally and seasonally where possible. Our beef and pork come from the New Forest and our game is from the village, with Manor farm pheasant, pigeon and rabbit together with venison from the local game keeper. Fish is delivered directly from the south coast and vegetables are from local suppliers. The menu changes regularly but always includes favourites such as our famous home made steak and kidney pudding and slow cooked pork belly along side seasonal specials. We also offer a good range of bar snacks and lighter meals including Welsh Rarebit, Sausage and Mash as well as The Rose and Thistle sandwiches including rare roast beef, smoked salmon with watercress and the famous RAT burger with smoked bacon, emmental and hand cut chips! The Rose and Thistle, built around 1580, was originally 3 cottages and became a bakers which then later started to retail liquor. The first listed landlord was Richard Pope in the early 1890's whose photo can still be found on the gentleman's toilet door. The pub has had several colourful landlords over the years one of whom is rumoured to still haunt the building. In the 1970's the place was made famous for its seafood by Pete and Pam Reid and people flocked from all around to taste the lobster. A consortium of villagers then purchased the pub who later sold to Tim Norfolk all who maintained the places great reputation for food over the last 20 years. Tim retired in June 2008 when Kerry arrived, taking the pub from strength to strength. In late 2014 Chris took over the reins, with his friendly attitude and fantastic team you can always be guaranteed a warm welcome and delicious freshly prepared food.

“The Best Food In The Area”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

We visited for a special birthday lunch. The food was fantastic, Stuffed mushrooms with black pudding to start, followed by sole (for she who must be obeyed) and a steak for myself. The portions were ample, as were all of the other meals we saw being served.
A return visit with friends is planned

“will definitely return soon”
Reviewed May 6, 2013

Booked as a party of 7 chatty ladies for Friday lunch. The place has loads of character, lovely food and good service. Wide appealing menu and specials. The veal chop was enormous AND tender, the sole delicious and lots of seasonal asparagus. The puds seemed a bit heavy for the warmer weather but maybe they will be changing that part of the menu soon. There is a pleasant and quiet front garden and the car park has a very narrow approach so if you have a choice take the small car. I would imagine it would be lovely in the evening. Well worth the trip out from Salisbury.

“Excellent food and lovely staff”
Reviewed May 1, 2013

We came for dinner on Monday night and the food was incredible, it was so refreshing to have such fresh and flavoursome food and was a real treat for us. Beautiful artichokes to start followed by a beautiful brill and my partner had fantastic duck. The dauphinoise potatoes were to die for and the vegetables were lovely, fresh and a kaleidoscope of colour.

As a family we have been going to the rose and thistle for twenty odd years and have always loved it's charm and friendly service. This was a true delight and made a great respite from difficult family problems and care for older family members. We only wished we'd got more of the family there on the sunday lunchtime as because you were fully booked we had to go to the compasses which was truly dreadful.

Thank you for giving us warmth, smiles and respite from our current struggle. We only wish your chefs would come to Brighton so we could enjoy the food more often!

Thank you for taking the time to write such a kind review - I am so pleased that we could accommodate you and that you felt a little respite from things at home. Sorry we could not do the same on the Sunday I am sad you had such a bad time. Hopefully we will see you again soon under slightly happier circumstances. (sorry can't move to Brighton - would be too close to my mum!)

This charming pub has been my local for twenty years.Kerry has been owner for past few years and her team delivery a memorable experience. The food is just cooked so well. Gemma is one of the key members who knows so well what service is all about. If you want a lovely meal out with great charm. This is the pub!
