Please if you want to have a pleasant meal DON'T COME HERE!!! The so called what he calls himself chef owner is a nightmare! If you challenge him then he will literally threaten you! I went to the restaurant and ordered a rare steak...it arrived well done! I told the waitress after 2 bites (just to make sure)...I'm really sorry But my steak is not RARE and she said "Oh Yes Obviously! I'm sorry!" She took it back to the kitchen and this man in what looked liked children's pyjama's for an adult came marching out of the kitchen and threatened my husband not me!!! He told him as a chef he should know that this was how it should be served etc ect! IF my husband was a chef and knew WHY OH WHY would i complain??? IHe came storming out of the kitchen to our table fing and blinding and tells me i have no idea because he serves 150 steaks a week and nobody complains!!!! I said "well maybe tonight you just made a mistake?!" Giving him the benefit of the doubt...he was very abusive...and we still had a £15.00 bottle of wine to finish...so as the waitress cleared my husband and child's plate another plate arrived with my RARE steak! After 15 minutes..(.by this time my husband and child had both finished their meal's) the waitress came out of the kitchen and put my steak down (this time without any sauce on the side just in a little pot)...I think he thought it might help me see my steak more clearly!...As i cut into it i could see it was well done! So my husband who was being very calm for a Sicilian....took the fork with my steak on it back to the kitchen to say to him "This STEAK IS NOT RARE"...the chef told him, in front of my son "To get the F... out of his kitchen!"...Well really if he was Gordon Ramsey I could kind of forgive him but he is NOT!!!! He then proceeded in front of my son to be VERY THREATENING towards him trying to justify his appalling cooking skills and then marched back in to the kitchen! TOTALLY unbelievable! We paid for our meal minus my steak which I only had 2 bites and then left HOWEVER what i forgot to add was that the started a so called SWISS RACLETTE was also DISGUSTING! The chef has no idea how to cook anything other than (in my opinion) sausage and chips! But that was probably one of his many boys in the kitchen as he obviously feels far too important!!!! In all my years of eating out around the world I have never had such a terrible unpleasant and unnecessary experience! All he had to say was "I'm Sorry I made a mistake...I hope that you don't mind waiting whilst i cook your meal again!" BUT the arrogant little Giant couldn't bring himself to do that! WHAT a mistake we made going there!!!!

Definintely recommend this hotel. Didn't get a chance to use the restaurant. The breakfast was lovely. All staff were friendly. Our room was very spacious, especially to say there were 3 of us, also with a good size bathroom. Little noisy due to being on a busy road and the night time entertainment across the road was very noisy late into the evening so would recommend earplugs for the lighter sleepers. Although slightly dated in places it was clean and functional. Would definitely stay again.

If you are contemplating a stay in the Fordingbridge area where that are many fine walks, some from the door, you will do a lot worse than the Ship Inn where we have just spent three nights.

We were accomodated in the twin-bedded 'Paddle Steamer Room' (Room 1) which was clean and comfortable with tea/coffee making facilities and an en-suite bathroom with a plentiful supply of hot water. I should add that the motor assisted flushing system was extremely noisy but that's a minor aside.

The food was superb - as good as we've ever enjoyed in Pubs/Inns (and some hotels!) -and we found all staff extremely welcoming and helpful, especially the owners, John, Christine & Gerald.

Overall it was excellent value for money. Very highly recommended.
