Stayed here for 2 nights we did 4 game drives and saw 4/5 or the big five what was great was that not only they searched for the big five but our ranger wikus was full of knowledge at just about everything in the bush from animals to plants to birds. He just loved everyone asking questions.
The lodges were fantastic yes there was the odd bug but hey you are on safari.
The lodges are part brick & part tent & even have outside showers.
The food was great & all the staff there are happy to help ,
The managers are always there with smiles and knowledge of the area
Can't wait to go again

Everything about marataba safari lodge was amazing and far exceeded our high expectations. We arrived to be greeted with a cold glass of wine and sat taking in the view whilst we waited for our lunch. The view was spectacular across the plain to the mountains and included our first sight of 1 of the big 5, a family of white rhinos at the nearby watering hole. The food was delicious and plentiful and included a typical South African BBQ in the car park on our second night. The car park had been transformed with candles and oil lanterns and the atmosphere was intimate and welcoming.
We did 3 game drives and saw all of the big 5, plus black rhinos, giraffes, bat eared foxes and lots of birds. The sundowners were a revelation. Imagine our surprise when the table, tablecloth, glasses and nibbles appeared. Never has a gin and tonic with ice and lemon tasted so good!
The accommodation has to be seen to be believed, the photos do not do them justice. The bedding, towels and toiletries were of an extremely high standard and the outside shower was a real treat.
There was a feeling of peace and well being throughout our stay and we left relaxed and refreshed for the rest of our South African adventure, we will be back but next time we will stay longer.
Thanks to all staff and especially Liam for his expertise and patience with 4 novices on their first safari.

We are 2 Danish familys which stayed at the Marataba Safari Lodge for two nights in week 42, 2013. We had great expectations due to reviews from Tripadvisor and we honestly didn't believe that Marataba Safari Lodge would be able to meet our expectations. They did - and then some...! We were 4 adults (age 35-38) and 4 children (age 5-9) who should participate in our first Safari ever.
Entering the Lodge was very overwhelming, driving more than 7 km on gravel road inside the fence and Warthogs, Zebras and Impalas was running around us. This and the beautiful sight of the Waterberg mountains was a perfect start. When we entered the parking spot we were greeted by two guides/rangers and from the start we felt very welcome.
The accomodation and the restaurant was impressive and we had great space for 4 persons in each tent/cabin.
During our stay we experienced 4 game drives with the same ranger, Liam. We had a wonderful stay at Marataba and we as well as our children are talking highly about what we have seen. A big thank you to all the crew at Marataba Safari Lodge and a special thanks to Liam which made our game drives super interesting, funny and a lifetime experience.

Best regards,

Magnus, Lasse, Maj-Britt, Jesper, Signe, Tobias, Pia and Allan

Just returned from a weekend at Marataba with our two little boys. Even though there were no other children at the lodge the staff were completely welcoming to and accommodating of Rhys and Leo. This meant so much as we went here as a special treat for my 40th birthday. Everything was exceptional - the tent, the view, the food, the drives with Gerald, the hours spent in the pool....thank you! Leo wanted to stay forever and Rhys couldn't decide what was his best part as said it was 'everything'. Thank you to you all, we loved our weekend!

While we were at Marataba (2 nights with my wife and 2 daughters, beginning September 2013), enjoying drinks, the luxury, and the gorgeous view from the verandah, our 8 year old said we were "living the life". And a few weeks after we had been to Marataba, I asked my daughters what they would choose if they could do anything in the world, and our 10 year old replied "Go to Marataba again". I can't do justice to the level of luxury and attention we enjoyed, from the heated water and towels every time we arrived after a safari to the cake spontaneously made for my daughter, although her birthday was only a week later. Special thanks to our attentive host Annelle and our enthusiastic and knowledgeable ranger Gerhard.

Room Tip: Tents are spead out, so those with reduced mobility may prefer those closer to lodge (although servi...

Spent the last few days at Marataba, and it was awesome! The views, as you arrive at the lodge, take your breath away. The accommodation was superb - who wouldn't love an outdoor shower with a view of the mountains?! The reserve was amazing - on our first game drive we saw the big 5 within an hour or so. Possibly because we were lucky enough to have the very experienced and very knowledgeable Wikus as a guide. It is worth mentioning that we saw leopard every day - a rare feat for any reserve. Well done, guys, we had an awesome time and we appreciated your hospitality! Morne, Jacques, Jaco, Conrad.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Marataba is a malaria-free 23000 hectare private concession within the Big5 Marakele National Park (Limpopo, South Africa). Just four hours from Johannesburg, this is a sanctuary where busy people can find themselves again by connecting with nature. We were rendered breathless by the dramatic Waterberg mountains, vast plains, rich animal diversity and winding rivers cutting through the landscape of the Marakele National Park. Rich red mountain rock meets lush green plains (where you will find yellowwood and cedar trees, 5m high cycads and tree ferns). All of the large game species from elephant and rhino to the big cats, as well as an amazing variety of birds (including the largest colony of endangered Cape vultures in the world, with more than 800 breeding pairs) have settled here. Marataba Safari Lodge is a simple extension of the natural environment beyond its walls - rich, bold, organic and patently magnificent. Whether you prefer your own company or that of new-found friends, there are a number of spots from which to soak up the view - hammock, pool lounger or grassy patch. On the menu for your pleasure is a smorgasbord of activities from which to choose. Whether game drive, walking trail, sunset river excursion on Miss Mara, or a private dinner for two, there is never enough time to exhaust the many ways there are to love this place. ... more   less
